Anybody thought about the Rio Grande Tennessee Pass

You know, this is one of my favorite routes. I have often dreamed of seeing it reopen. Or better yet, see it back in its D&RGW heyday.

If someone is willing to try to seriously put this together, I say assemble a team of 5 or so people, and lets do it!!

I live in Colorado, and I would be willing to drive around a bit to get first hand pictures.

We will need DEM's and maps of the track placement.

Im good at laying track myself. Not too good at realistic scenery, but not terrible either.

Thats my offer, who is actually serious about a 2 or 3 year freeware Tennessee Pass project (I just don't do Payware)

I am currently doing some research for Tennessee Pass and The Royal Gorge Line. I have Trainzdem and all the SRTM data I need to do alittle more research. If I get the DEM made and our team does not want to pursue it I will upload it to our Download depot for anyone to use. It will be exported into 04 and packaged as a CDP. I beleive that it will import ok to 06 or 09.
I'll let you know.

Kevin:)

Not sure if it's any use, but this site has free downloadable track charts and gradient profiles for various D&RGW routes.

To set the terrain and mapping up you really need to investigate Transdem. This is a payware utility (but excellent value for money) it will process your DEM and in the case of US there is a tutorial for connecting to a web mapping service, which will place images of 1:24,000 maps on the terrain ready to follow in Surveyor. Trace the route, specify how many "boards" you want either side of the line for distant mountains, preferred draw distance etc. and export to the Editing folder for import via CMP.

that would be handy, its hard to lay track if you have to guess where it goes. Ive seen it used before.

And for such a long route, I'd say it would almost be a requirment

I just think I might be in...

When I get better at Gmax I will certainly try to model Scenery & Rolling Stock! I just wish there were more DRGW Locomotives with ARN numbering systems... By the way, does anybody have JointedRail's DRGW SD50? I'd like a summary of it so I can decide wether to buy it or not.

Unless my computer crashes, I can definately do a 2 or 3 year project! though I predict that we might have to divide the route into smaller pieces...

For the Royal Gorge I would definitely go for NED 1/3 arc sec. NED 1 arc sec is noticeably less impressive for the canyon. SRTM 1 arc sec as an orbital DEM will be even worse, despite having the same nominal resolution. SRTM 3 arc sec is totally out of question for this section.

(I have used the Royal Gorge as a test field for DEM data transfer to Trainz.)

Hi Roland, glad to here from you.

Where can I get NED 1/3 arc sec. data?

I only need 3 quadrangles to do Tennessee pass. I currently have done from Pueblo, CO. to Salida, CO.. If you say that the NED data is more crisp than the SRTM 1 data then the canyon area will look alot nicer.

Kevin:)

Roland,

Do you still have the NED data for the Royal Gorge Route, from Pueblo, CO. to Salida, Co.?

If you do could you send it to me?

Thanx:)

Need Help with NED dem creation for Tennessee Pass.

My Problem: I have a computer with 3 gigs of RAM and it is maxed out. In order to create the map section between Pueblo and Salida, I must join 4 NEDs together. I do not have enough RAM to do this in Tranzdem. I thought about splicing them in Trainz, but the problem is that the splice point is in the corner of the 4 NEDs and is smack dab in the middle of the Royal Gorge. If anyone out there that has a computer with more RAM and has Tranzdem, could you please reply and possibly help out. I will be able to get the rest of the route from there.

Thanks

Kevin
