An Important Amtrak question

Southern Serves the South
I was wondering, if I paid for my tickets by myself, 16 years old, and I I'm going to have a driver's license this summer, can I get on a Amtrak train without a parent or guardian?

I am sure that your parents would have to ask themselves. As well as you would need a guardian to pick you up at the other end of the trip.. Such as an aunt, grandparents etc. The conductors may also be tasked with keeping tabs on you as well. Although that is only with certain crews... But being 16 years old and having a driver's license bears nothing in the decision. Seeing as your still a minor, and even with a driver's license your not allowed over state lines(pending the state your license is issued from I believe?) The only exception to this if a parent or guardian is with you.

What If I take a trip from one city to another in the same state, does the rules still apply? Pay my own way for a round trip, and call a taxi cab(or wait for a shuttle bus or city transit bus) to pick me up when I reach the next station is what I wanna do this summer.

i think they have to contact your parents just to ask if they know that your taking the train and they will ask wether someone is meeting you at you destination i think could be wrong

Heavens as long as I had a valid ticket I didn't have a problem in the UK. From the age of 12 I'd just go off for the day on the train.

Cheerio John

You are right there John but train travel is far more common and used here than across the pond. I see children all the time on trains even Primary school (11 and under) where I live.

This is why I love Amtrak!!! LOL!!!

I got a reply from Amtrak.com earler today here it is below.

Dear Whoever:
Thank you for contacting us.

Children age 15 and older are able to travel unaccompanied on Amtrak without restriction and are considered a full fare adult.
We hope this information will assist you.

Sincerely,
Susan E

Hello, I was wondering, is it okay to have a 16 year old, who has a driver's license(legal in North Carolina) for identification, and pays his/her own way to ride an Amtrak train round trip and travels in North Carolina only. Can he/she get on the train without a parent or guardian? Please reply back, Thanks!!

First, I would delete your name details and your email address from the above post.

Why don't you ask Amtrak themselves and find out? It's still a free call number.
