An easy way to delete item from a route

Could you not delete it from a config and then use 'Delete Missing Assets?

Jamie

Jamie there are two different things going on in this thread which i will try once and for all to clear up.

1. You CANNOT delete an asset which appears in a route by editing the route config's kuid table. This is verifiable fact. There are no exceptions. It CANNOT be done. This issue is the subject of this thread.

2. Bolivar's red herring is that you can prevent an asset which you do not have installed from appearing as missing content in CM by manually removing the asset's kuid from the kuid table. True, you can. But N3V provide a one-click method of doing exactly that by simply clicking the 'Delete Missing Content' option in the Main Menu. Not only will this 'one click fix' clean up the kuid table, but it will also remove all references to the asset in gnd and/or obs files, which Bolivars hack does not. Bolivars hack removes nothing from anywhere, it simply fools CM into thinking the asset is removed when in fact it is still called by the route and is still missed by the route when the route is loaded in Surveyor or Driver. Not only is the hack a needless waste of time but because the asset is still sought by Surveyor/Driver it is possibly (depending on the nature of the asset) detrimental to performance. Which of course is exactly why Auran/N3V provided the one-click-fix to entirely remove all reference to the missing assets from all route files.

ROFL at simupost with Zec :)

My technique is to alter the file name or mesh reference of the builtin you do not want, in the Content Manager . The route that was almost useless to me now gives 35fps with all sliders max'd instead of 7 to 9fps.

The sacred built-in assets are a pain!!!!:(

Well, the True Believers ain't gonna be happy until I acknowledge their clever hack works. If you have a route that shows a missing dependency;

1. Open the route for edit in content manager, edit the config.txt file, find the KUID for the missing dependency in the KUID table and delete it. Save, exit, commit.
2. Launch trainz, edit the route in surveyor. Click Main Menu, Delete Missing Assets. Save, all fixed.

Here's an alternate method;
1. Stand up, turn around three times to the left (three times to the right if you're in the southern hemisphere, due to the coriolis effect), snap your fingers twice, and say "ISKOBOBBLE!"
2. Sit down, launch trainz, edit the route in surveyor. Click Main Menu, Delete Missing Assets. Save, all fixed.

Either method will do the exact same thing, or you could just do step 2 and skip the nonsense, which will also get rid of the missing dependency.

What, no solution if your located right on the Equator?:hehe:

This was not the concern of why I started this thread, but every time I have use the ''delete missing asset'' tool, on a specific route- a huge route I am working on, trainz crash.

I have submitted a ticket to the help desk, but they did not find out what is the problem. 1 asset is a trandem texture I removed from my computer ( main part of my map was white and removing it brought the classic gray. The other one is an asset I created myself and deleted from CM (I don't even remember what it was). Since then, that problem happened.

Any idea ?

OK - back on-topic..

I doubt if the TransDem (trandem?) texture is at fault, but more details about the asset you created yourself then removed would be helpful.

First thought would be to clone a similar asset you know to be error-free and give it the same kuid as the mystery asset had and see if that appears on the route. At least then you have something to delete or replace...

Main problem with that, AFAIK versions later than TRS2004 won't allow you to assign KUID numbers, you're forced to take whatever number the auto generation gadget picks. You could keep cloning until it hits the magic number I suppose.

"Huge route" could be a memory issue, one option is to start at the west (or north) end, delete half the baseboards until you reach the middle, save with a different name. Then open the original route again, delete half the baseboards starting at the east (or south) end to the middle, save that as a different route. See if you can delete those assets from the two halves, then merge them back together. Or borrow a computer with more RAM and try it on that.

I never 'clone' from the right-click menu. Copy the original to the desktop via Edit In Explorer and you can give it any kuid number you like, then import it from there...

I agree. Everyone knows you can't trust a clone...;)

Interesting, thanks Dermmy! I originally got TRS2004 and a bunch of addons as a gift from that evil Sith Lord Phil Skene trying to lure me to The Dark Side (it worked, here I am! :cool: ) and when I got TS2010 I made the mistake of using "Import Content" to import all the stuff from TRS2004 into TS2010. :eek: Obviously that was a bad idea, especially being a n00b who had no clue how to fix broken content, so I hadn't tried the import content since then. :hehe:

Just tried it now, edited one of my locos and copied the folder to the desktop, then tried importing content from the desktop. Didn't work, it tried to import .txt and .pdf files and complained about illegal characters (Hey I'm from Chicago, what's wrong with illegal characters? Who the hell else am I gonna hang around with?) and didn't import anything. Okay, so try from the folder itself;

C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Ward\Desktop\pon gp9 hi 245

And that worked as advertised, gave it an old 3 digit KUID number that I never used and it did indeed import without a hiccup. Great tip, gonna come in handy for some of the more difficult replacement problems. OTOH, if we could actually get this;

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=81412

We wouldn't need to fight the programming to fix problems.

Memory issue is the most possible. The route is 628 meg. My PC has 8gb or ram OS win 7 x64. I stopped digging to find out what was the problem some time ago since I have only 2 missing asset.

Thanks for the info !

then tried importing content from the desktop. Didn't work...

Wandering off-topic, but again don't use File > Import from the menu, just drag the content folder from the desktop into either CM's 'Download' window or the 'Main List' window. Quicker, easier...

Andy ;)

SYNTAX ERROR: Bad command or file name

Newfangled GUI tricks, after 15 years I'm still trying to get used to calling file manager "explorer" and a directory a "folder" and you want me to click and drag pictures onto pictures? :hehe:

"The route is 628 meg" Yikes, you using real dirt and rocks? :eek: Only thing I can suggest for that is try installing (or replacing using Dermmy's KUID trick) one of the missing dependencies, see if it will delete one at a time. If not;

Replace the mesh with something like a cooling tower mesh painted with weird colors, makes it easy to find them to delete manually.

Now there are times when there are a gazillion of something that can cause Trainz to hang when using the replace assets tool. You need to select the "This baseboard only" option. This might take a little bit more time to do, but it beats click, delete, click delete, replace, replace, replace, etc., or fiddling around and wasting time with config files, which doesn't work anyway.

You've seen my method to remove lots of objects, I hope. Here's my quick and easy replacement method:

Replace it with something else that's not built in.
Save the route.
Close out of Trainz.
Go into CM.
Find your replacement asset. - The one you used to remove the one you don't want.
Delete the replacement item. (Maybe make a backup to import it back in again if you want). Your route will now show a missing dependency, or dependencies if there's more than one item you binned.

Open up CM and delete this replacement item of your choice.

Close CM
Open Trainz again
Go to your route, and pick delete missing assets.
Save.

You're done.

Having re read and experimented with deletion of kuids, I realise I was wrong and have seen the error of my ways. Thanks to Dermmy and especially Zec, I have seen the light. I had not realised that this method of deletion, though seeming to work, is only an illusion. No thanks to the arrogant user, who thinks that by being so, gets respect and adulation. No you don't. Logic and rationality gets people's attention, not a know it all attitude. You will eventually learn that it is better to use intellectual rationale , not insults to make people listen and respect your views. You know who you are... That's all I have got to say about that..(thanks Forest, I 've been wanting to use that line for awhile now)

OK, I've searched everywhere, the TS12 manual, the Wiki, and this forum and I can find no documentation on how to use the Replace assets tool in the surveyor. Help! :'(

LOL naturally I found the answer directly after making this post. Of course the tool does not work for the application I had in mind.

Curse this stupid game. (But it is so fun...)
