Hi;
I just found the American Freedom train on DLS, but I cannot get the SP Class GS-4 steam engine to work because the rear bogey is faulty.
I am running TS2010 SP1, so maybe it works in previous version?

I have tried converting the .pm to .im, but still get this error when I commit the asset.

Error: Unable to load primary texture 'sp_classgs-4_4_8_4_body.tga' for texture file 'sp_classgs-4_4_8_4_body.texture.txt'.
Error: Binary conversion failed for texture resource 'sp_classgs-4_4_8_4_body.texture.txt'.

If anyone knows of a replacement bogey for the SP Class Gs-4 engine, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

FW

fwassner,
open the bogie for edit in explorer and delete this file: sp_classgs-4_4_8_4_body.texture.txt
It will not hurt and the bogie will still work correctly. I just tried it.

I ran the rear bogey file (USA SP Class GS-4 Engine Rear Bogey,<kuid:59906:50011>) thru PEV's mesh-text-viewer and see these lines:

316 Texture Type: 3 = TEX_SHINE
320 Texture Name Size: 80
324 Texture Name: C:\Program Files\Auran\Trainz\World\custom\bogeys\SP_ClassGS-4_Bck4\xxx.texture
404 Texture Amount : 0.100

which shows it tries to apply xxx.texture as a type TEX_SHINE, which is not allowed in TS2010. This can be corrected by running the mesh file thru PEV's PM2IM program. Since the loco's mesh and all 3 bogey meshes are .pm types and have the stupid missing shadow error, I ran all 4 thru PM2IM and edited the config.txt files to add a mesh-table. All commit without errors.

Uh,.. OK.
Now if only the GS4 creator would just read this string and fix it, TS2010 would be a better world.

Thanks. That worked.
But I am a little disappointed with this engine. It freezes about every ten seconds for about two seconds. This is something peculiar to this loco, since it does not happen with the same train using Amtrak (Jointed Rail) locos.

I'll try the original SP engine, but I expect the same.

The train cars are nicely done though. Lots of detail, and brings back memories.
I saw the Freedom Train (with steam) pass through my town on Penn Central track. Several months later, I visited the exhibit when it was down at E-port.

IMO, the train looks great with the Jointed Rail Amtrak F40PH units.

I can not find the SP daylight or the freedom train in the 2009 dsl?

I've found myself doing that sort of stuff a bit too much sometimes. :( People really need to be better about fixing misspelled lines of Text in Configs and having Textures be Even-Pixeled and whatnot BEFORE RELEASING THE ASSET.

Nope

I deleted the file but the loco still does not work in TS2009. Help! My son loves this train and I can't get it to work since upgrading to W7 x64

To find the SP GS4 4449 in both Daylight and Freedom Train colors on the DLS, look for "American Freedom" and "USA SP".

Here are the names and kuids of the 2 locos.
USA SP Class GS-4 Steam Engine,<kuid:59906:4449>
American Freedom:Class GS-4 Steam Engine,<kuid:59906:4459>

did you ever figure out how to fix the 4449?

This is a true story of how I fixed the 4449. It was back in 1976 when it was making its tour of this country pulling the American Freedom Train. I had a chance to photograph the train as it made its way from Sioux City to Des Moines on the Milwaukee Road. It had been inspected in Sioux City and when they got to Des Moines, the inspector told the engineer, Doyle McCormic that the flanges on the front driver were worn thinner than the 15/16" allowed by the safety standards. He would permit the engine to be towed to Omaha, but it could go no further. As it turns out, the American Freedom Train was parked in West Des Moines about a block from a machine shop that I used to make parts. Back in those days, I was a machine tool designer. Doyle wandered into the machine shop hoping to find someone that could make a cutting tool to re-machine the tires on 4449. The machinist recommended that he contact me. Later that week, Doyle and I met and discussed how fixing this problem was done in the old days. The solution was called a "ledger box" - a device that would replace the brake shoe for the driver being fixed. In this ledger box would be a cutting tool that would machine the tire as the locomotive was slowly run back and forth on a stretch of track.

Being a big steam fan, I jumped at the opportunity. We could find no drawings or references from the past other than stories told by old steam engineers. So, I put on my thinking cap and designed a new ledger box. I had it build by a machine shop in Pella, Iowa because they could get it built in a week. The following week, I took it to Omaha where Doyle had made arrangements with the Union Pacific to use a stretch of a little used siding. We got under way and before 10am had it installed and had made our first attempt at machining on the fly so to speak. Well, 4449 did not have enough speed control at the slow speed we needed, so we brought in a wench truck. The plan was to used the wench to pull 4449 backwards at a controlled rate of speed. It didn't work. The cable broke on our first attempt.

After that Doyle disappeared but turned up about an hour later. He had visited with Union Pacific officials and they agreed to loan us a switcher and engineer. This did the trick! That diesel electric had the control and power we needed at slow speeds. It took the rest of the week to get the first set of drivers machined. They started out as 80" drivers but were now 78" in diameter. The learning curve was steep, but learn we did. We finished the remaining 3 driver sets in 6 days and were ready to double head out of Omaha with the Union Pacific's 8444 that Sunday morning.

I have a steel shaving that came from the second left driver. It is a nice shade of blue, uniquely curled and makes a nice scupture.

I just couldn't resist telling this story given Gary's question.

SuperFudd, there is another chapter to the story that happened a year later where I fixed it again after I had moved to Texas, but I'll save that for another time.

Wow! That is a great story!
As for the bogie, yes, I did manage to fix it. I don't recall what I did anymore. It was probably something I fixed with one or more of the PevSoft tools.
But there is yet another issue with this train. There is a "flying driver" up in the sky that appears above and to the left of the loco as it chugs along.
It's in the Freedom train loco, and the SP class that it was skinned from.
So far, no one has been able to tell me how to fix that problem. Otherwise, the Freedom train runs perfectly!

The floating parts are defined within the mesh file for the driver bogey. There is an updated version available as USA SP Class GS-4 Engine Mid Bogey,<kuid2:59906:50013:1> but it uses the same mesh so still has the floating parts. Since these errors are in the mesh, only the author can fix them.
