Am I crazy for attempting this? - Added Video see page 3

Hi there. This is my first post here. Had Trainz on my Mac for a month or two now and... well, you already know its great, thats why you're here right? Anyhoo... I'm a graphic designer, full of creativity and with a technical mind so stumbling on Trainz as I did and then discovering Surveyor I'm totally in my element building my own little world and working out the technicalities of track laying and signal placement etc. (even though I know very little about actually running trains). So I've taken it upon myself to create a really great route and with my perfectionism taking hold I need to ask myself, or more importantly other people, am I crazy for attempting the following route? (see link for image - 370kb ish)

I found a great stretch of river, purely by chance, on Google maps. Type 'Ohiopyle' into Google maps and zoom out a bit. From Connelsville in the North through Ohiopyle and down to Confluence. I thought that would look sexy with a winding track and a few steam locos chugging through that valley. So I set to work. Two months later and I have all the track laid, the mountains hand crafted using an overlaid grid I created in Photoshop using screen grabs from Google Maps. "12 squares East, 17 South, the river bends 10 squares to the west". Thats how I've created it all so far! About 30% of it is 'painted' and scenery in place. Two large train yards, various industries, a narrow gauge logging route and some complex, AI shunting and switching for getting those locos out of tight mountain valleys. I'll post links to images (may even do a little video) later depending on the response I get here.

I've studied signaling to get things looking and working correctly. In my mind the route is set in Canada as I'm modeling Canadian Pacific from the 50's but as I've said the route is based around topography in Ohiopyle PA.

So why am I asking if Im crazy? Well, I've done it Real Scale! On the image in the link look carefully to see a thin black line, thats the rough route of the track. That red bit on the far left, takes 5 minutes to traverse! From blue marker to blue marker (following the black line obviously) it takes just over an hour. All of that is what I have laid so far and 30% of that route is finished. The rest of the route on the image, I'm considering adding. What do you think? Am I crazy? Its a 150 square miles or so I think!

I'm a perfectionist, graphic designer, that means everything HAS to look spot on. The route so far has no, graphical glitches, like track slightly raised of the ground, odd looking grass splines, floating trees or dodgy track. If a tree looks in an odd position it gets moved until it looks right from all angles lol. I've gone a little crazy with the splines by the way but I have a maxed 27" iMac 3.4 i7 with SSD, 2GB VRAM and 16GB ram running at full 5000m draw distance with graphics settings all on max hehe and it never misses a beat :)

The mountains are hand sculpted with the terrain tools, they look good (in my opinion) from all angles). The two train yards (actually make that one I deleted one of them last night) took a week each to draw up, plan and layout! As I know very little about trains and running them I studied how to create a good yard that actually works efficiently with AI turntables etc.

I think once complete (if ever) I'd like to upload it to the DLS and let you guys enjoy it too. So if all this sounds interesting (i'll get some screenies up soon) and if you like the rough route on the link let me know and I'll forge ahead with it. Unless you think I'm crazy ad should go walk the dog or something?!

Welcome to the forums Stuart! Why stop now even if someone says you're crazy? You've already invested so much time and effort you know you have to see it come to fruition! It appears to be the making of a great route, and screenshots will be greatly received. It may end up being viable for only those with the fastest computers, but the rest of us can enjoy your results through the forum.

Daft question but does the amount of splines make much of an impact on performance? If the draw distance is set lower it should be ok for people on less capable machines right?

Hi there. This is my first post here.

Welcome to Trainz, and welcome to the forums.

Exactly what it's for, in my opinion.

am I crazy for attempting the following route?

Not at all.

In my mind the route is set in Canada as I'm modeling Canadian Pacific from the 50's but as I've said the route is based around topography in Ohiopyle PA.

Biggest consideration here is that there are subtle environmental differences that might need to be deployed for the route in Canada, as contrasted with the same route in Pennsylvania. Examples of things that might be different: different species of trees and other plants, slightly different architectural details on buildings, etc.

Mapping out the points on Google Maps (Connellsville to Ohiopyle to Confluence), and getting driving directions, I see that it is 30 miles from Connellsville to Confluence, following Pennsylvania State Route 361 and that the estimated time to make the trip is about 54 minutes. Examining the railroad, on Google maps, from the right of way alignment, I would expect that the line would have a maximum speed limit of about 30 miles per hour, and perhaps less if (as I suspect) the line is not signalled. This would make the trip take an hour, if not more, in the real world at real time.

I've gone a little crazy with the splines by the way but I have a

There's certainly no problem creating your route for the resources in your computer, but if you contemplate uploading to the DLS, there are lots of fellow members of the community who are not blessed to have access to the computing power you can muster, and you might want to produce a less intensive version for uploading. Further, if you plan to upload the route, I'd suggest that the segment you've completed thus far (plus, if you wanted, the segment to the North, up to Mt. Pleasant) is a good sized route, and is a good size to upload by itself to the DLS. The other two legs in our image, and the line across the top, might make three more routes.

Unless you think I'm crazy ad should go walk the dog or something?!

Well, you may need to go walk the dog anyway, but the wouldn't have anything to do with being crazy, though I don't happen to think you are.

Some splines are great frame rate killers. Generally they have always been harder on performance than using many iterations of the same single model. Some use of splines is unavoidable though.

If his route is a performance hog, all he would have to do is include a note to that effect. Lots of routes are performance hogs; heck, N3V even includes them with each version! :hehe:

Screenies as promised. Still a work in progress remember and these screens are only from the route Connelsville down to Confluence. I have however changed the names. My plan is use the real world topography as a basis and make the rest up :P

Theres 31 so here are the links to save them all downloading here and killing your connection. Number 22 is a map view from Trainz to give you an idea of the scale so far. They average 370kb each.

..., am I crazy for attempting the following route?...

Stuart
If you like it, then it's not crazy. Doesn't matter what others say about it.

If everyting has to be exact, be careful not to over do the detail. If you can't see it from a normal point of view, it's not there. Like a good movie set, the back areas of most objects are never seen so why force Trainz to render it. That includes behind mouintains and other distant parts of the landscape. It may be tempting to detail the stream deep in the woods but who will see it except the rendering engine?

Welcome to Route Building. Your life is about to get sucked into a 60hour a week commitment to make the next one you do better than the last one you did for no more reward than personal gratification and the occasional "OOOH - That's nice!"

Crazy? Nope, around here that passes for normal!

Great looking job so far.....

Andy ;)

I'm only detailing the bits that will be seen. Probably more than most people would but The foothills and mountains are positioned and sculpted in a way as to look good from all angles but also to create a backdrop that helps to 'cover up' as much as possible so I don't have to detail areas far from the track. :) There are a few waterfalls set back from the track and in mountain valleys but they are seen (if looking that way obviously) when traveling by the river mouth. They kind of peek through the valley at you and it looks really impressive even if its only for a few seconds.

Let me know if you guys are interested in seeing more and I'll post more screenshots as I go. As I dont know much about trains and laying track per se you may spot something like a dodgy track layout or something that you can point out to me.

I love your screenshots, I am not much of a fan of U.S Railroads, but I have to say the route your building is amazing, I don't think your crazy, well not as crazy as one person we had on here a while ago, saying they were going to build all the railways in the entire United Kingdom, we didn't see much of them after that, so maybe they are still building it, who knows.

Keep up the good work and the very best of luck at building a superb route.

Thanks mate. Makes me want to add more splines hehe.

Is that a question regarding my route or a quip aimed at the crazy YouTube layout? FYI there are no iffy dependency issues on my route. I simply wont allow it lol. I try my best to fix stuff but if it starts getting complicated it gets trashed hehe.

Hello Stuart,

This is realy great work . If I only had your talent. Presently, I'm trying to learn Gmax and Sketchup ( Boy oh Boy - what a job ).

If you have some spare time ( what a question ), perhaps you can add some extra info to this thread http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?84719-Scenery-–-let’s-get-real!&highlight=mezzoprezzo .

It's a thread by Mezzoprezzo about making scenery in Trainz. I often wonder, how do they make it.

Best regards

Kurt

Thanks for that thread link. I'll have a proper look when I can. My secret weapon was going to be Good Weather fog once everything was in place. A bit of fog covers up and fills in any iffy areas I may of missed. A bit like fire and flames all over Lord of the Rings movies lol. Use it to cover up the crap bits lol.

Nah, not about the route , aimed at that crazy YouTube layout, never seen anything like it :)

Your screens are great, looks like the start of something wonderful! Thanks for posting them.

Thanks for the comments. Don't be afraid to tear me apart on anything. I thrive on constructive criticism :) I do have a 'noob' question regarding track however... the track I've chosen, I cant remember what its called I'm at work but I've noticed when I reach a bridge the track on the bridge does not change to the track Im trying to connect to it. Im certain it has in the past but I think I was using Aurans Built in track before. Now Im not it doesnt seem to work on bridges. Is this a bug in the track im using or am I not doing something right? I have nice looking track until I get to a bridge and then its whatever the default texture on the bridge is?! Look (closely) at screenshot 5 on previous page.
