Alabama Gulf & Atlantic -- The Camellia Route

jadebullet

might be back?
I figured that it might be a good a time as any to start up a thread for the Alabama Gulf & Atlantic. The route is set in the 1930s southeastern United States, and is a project with many different, and talented route builders working on it.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some screens of some of the work I have done on the route.

A fascinating time period and region. The depression-era South had such a unique look to it. Electrification and telephones making inroads through the REA and everything in the countryside beginning to change what had existed pretty much since Reconstruction. Looking forward to seeing more.

Well, you don't have to wait too long. I have managed to finish another section tonight. This one is just a basic run through scene, but it includes a car ferry that I based on a similar car barge used by the Mississippi Central. By the way, is it just me, or is Southeastern US railroading very lacking in how much it was recorded. It is very easy to find pictures of almost any other location in the country, but you search for pics of the south and there isn't even half the amount of pictures.

The pictures are out there, but a good chunk of them unfortunately have not been digitized or are only available through a for-pay service. I don't know if you've looked, but one good resource that generally doesn't appear, on say Google image search, are university and state library collections. They require some searching within their archives, but contain a lot of info.

A few I know of:

Auburn University http://diglib.auburn.edu/collections/aces/

Virginia Tech http://imagebase.lib.vt.edu/ Might be too far north for your uses, but has a great deal of photographs done by the N&W in the 20s and 30s

University of Alabama http://content.lib.ua.edu/cdm4/about.php

Mississippi State Library http://mdah.state.ms.us/arrec/digital_archives/

Georgia State Library http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/vanga/html/vanga_homeframe_default.html

You can probably turn up more googling around various universities and libraries.

Alabama person here. Was this a real railroad or just fiction? Most rural scenes should show horse pulled plows, wagons, etc.

Is this route available yet?

No, it is not prototypical, and no, it's not released yet, it is a work in progress by several people. Keep an eye out for more though ;)

Cheers
