After today, you won't see me again!!!

...snip!..........
Noel, this library here allows 1 hour time limits for 5 dollars. Very reasonable I think.

Hi Col,

Yes that does sound quite reasonable.
I could get 30 minutes free in Coffs Harbour libraries, which is great.
If I joined the library, I could then get one-hour blocks for free. Of course I'd need to book a time available.

Hi woody,
Australian passenger services are run by different companies.
The Ghan, that runs between Melbourne and Darwin, the Indian Pacific running from Sydney to Perth and the Overland from Adelaide to Melbourne are run by the Great Southern Rail.
There is an XPT service from Melbourne to Sydney, not sure who runs that.
There are a number of railways within Victoria run by different companies.
I dont know about New South Wales services.

Cheers,
Mike

Well, today has been interesting.

I was booked in to have a haircut at 11:30am, no one there, place not even open. The janitor was there and phoned through to the hairdresser and now its after 1pm. Small town I guess but service is not up to standard.

Thats strange Colhad, if they booked you in they should be there. Even in my small town they are there even if no one is booked in :hehe: ..... oh thats right .... nothing else to do in town during the day so may as well sit around chatting with other staff :hehe:

I don't think I've ever been as cold as this before. Every night, the temps plummit, easily below zero. Not sure how far but I would guess probably -3, -4, probably more.

My sister's place is in an old creek more or less, below the highway that runs past it. The cold air just sort of sits in it, freeeeeezing. I'm staying in a caravan, got warm blankets and all but can still feel the cold.

Only got 4 more days here, coming home on Monday.

This maybe the last time I post before coming home on Monday, unless I find time on Monday morning. So until Wednesday evening, this is Colhad signing off!!

Heh, I'm still here. Train leaves at 5:40pm this arvo, so getting my fix for the last time before Wednesday evening.

Be in Townsville tomorrow, spend another 6 hours there, dunno how I'll kill time there but I'm sure I'll find something.

Go out to eat while you're in Townsville.:D
If you've got the cash, that is what I would do, try something new.
Then check out the local scene, like go into some shops, look around, get yourself an ice cream, visit the town museum....by the time you do all this, the train will arrive!

Yeah, I usually go up to the Mall. They have net cafes up there as well actually.

Don't mind waiting at the station for a bit as well, see some of the nickel trains. I will post some pics of them when I get home. Usually 1x 2150 class hauling I'd say 20 odd brown hoppers.

Like this train....

Ah that long trip home ........ I remember many of these :D , in some ways you would like more time to look around but in others you wish the homeward trip would be over quickly.

Have a look around and sit back and relax, have a look in the shops as Woody says.

See you when your home.

Just got home, Inlander was 5 hours late getting into the 'Curry. I'm led to believe there was a minor derailment in Mount Isa. Got into Townsville about 40 minutes before the Sunlander south to bring me back to Brisbane.

Got to see one Nickel train, 2150D lead fully loaded hoppers past Townsville station.

I will have some photos later.

Good to be home.:D

Welcome back!

You've reminded me - I have unfinished business on that stretch of coastline - we used Townsville to change aeroplanes on the trip from Brisbane to Cairns (the joys of airline employee staff travel!) and on the little Dash 8 coming away from Townsville, the small seaside towns and villages looked so pretty! Gotta go back one day!

(I'm envious of your train travel too - but there's no way my wife would put up with that kind of journey! I can't even get her to do the overnight Nairobi - Mombasa service in September when we go to Kenya - and the First Class experience is supposedly wonderful! Go to dinner, your beds are made up while you are in the Restaurant Car - wake up in the morning, go to the Restaurant Car for breakfast and there is the wilderness set out before you with the wid animals grazing! No wonder so many people died when this railway was built - many of the navvies were carted off by lions!)

Glad you had a good time! Nice to see railway punctuality is still legendary! LOL

Welcome Home Col, good to see you back.

Lucky you caught the Sunlander in time, or another night in Townsville.

my sympathies for you having to put up with queensland railway for 2 weeks col.. just want to drop a line and say an entire platform in central station sydney made up of refurbished railway carriages is a backpacker place now.. havent stayed there yet myself but it looks good.. and waking up on the station.. legally.. is rather tempting.. next time drift down here.. not .. yuck.. futher into queensland..

see some real trains :)

Glad you got home safely Colhad!

I'm planning a train trip on the Empire Builder from Chicago Illinois to Portland Oregon. My grandparents live in Oregon so we want to take the train, beats airlines by a long shot!

Woody

Well Col, have a great trip. I haven't been on a long train trip like that in years. They're an awesome way to think of new Trainz ideas as you watch the countryside go past your window.

Have fun!
