I made a Diagram to show what the purposes of the yard is

The green line is the mainline with a station coming up after the yard

The orange line is just yards for parking frieght or passenger cars

And the red line is for locos to park like turntables sidings etc

If your trying to imitate the 1940s/50s look then it would be a lot cleaner and newer looking. Unless the yard has been abandon but even then it would just look rusty not trashy. Its more the 70s and later that you start to really see graffiti and trash take over urban areas.

A yard does more than just hold the rolling stock. You may want to look at Google Earth views of various yards.

Many yards have an incoming and outgoing yard within a larger yard. with the engine facility somewhere in between the two along with a bypass mainline to allow through trains such as passenger trains and non-stop freights to continue on without getting stuck in the yard. The yard may also have an east-west setup, or north-south type yard so that the incoming and outgoing service both directions.

If you are modeling the later era, there's usually fewer tracks and many have been replaced by industrial parks with warehouses and small industries right off the yard. These industries will range from plastics companies receiving pellets to lumber, and sand and gravel companies just to name a few.

There's something I forgot to mention. Sometimes, the passenger tracks may be connected to a big loop track to allow the turning of whole consists. This is common around stub-end terminals, and I remember seeing them used back before there were push-pull configurations for passenger trains. Today, the two loops found at the two terminals in Boston, MA for example are no longer used with the one on at the North Station yard completely gone as is the rest of the hump and yard on that end.
