advice needed....

Good morning (in my part of the world) Trainz members.

I have made the purchase of Trainz 2010 EE. This is a big move for me as I have not purchased a Trainz product since TRS04! Personally, I didn't feel that the newer versions offered enough in substance to make the change plus, I was satisfied with what I had. Well, the move has now been made so I am seeking from all you experts out there, suggestions/advice I should consider in order to make the transfer successfully. I don't have the new version yet, it will take a little time to get here so this is advanced preparation.

Naturally I will want to move my '04 items (I have lots) over to my '10 edition. Things like CDP suggestions and how best to cleanly move my items without a lot of fuss or bother. Service Packs - what should I be doing with those for '10 EE? I will assume there is a least one for it and if so, which one becomes a must have? What should I know about compatibilty mode (I keep reading about this mode) vs what ever other modes '10 EE may have?

Generally, I am seeking whatever info I can in order to make this as painless as possible for me. Your help, I am sure, would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, when I have made this transfer completely, I will see about making my 3 routes (Cajon Pass), Western Pacific and Edge County available on the DLS in their updated versions.

Thank You,

roymac

As for "MODES," compatibility mode makes it so older out dated and faulty items can be used. Moving content from 04 to 10 might result in a lot of faulty items. Native mode apparently looks better, but will not let you use faulty content

As for getting your content in, under file there is a option to "Import Content." Then just find the folder that has all your 04 content in it and hit ok. It should take some time to import every thing from 04 to 10, but you should get every thing.

As for patching, Id patch to the latest version. All kinds of little tweaks and addition's that make it nice. But patch first, then play around with whats in game before you import all your content.

Thats just from what I know form TRS10, and my two and a half cents.

thanks JIb228.

I will remember to install the patch first. From the sounds of it, I may want to play the game in "Native" mode to appreciate the improvements. If so, how much of your older content were you able to actually import vs discard because you weren't able to 'fix' the content's issues?

A lot of users have been working hard on this to correct older items to run in 'Native 2010' mode, but in my estimation, you are still looking at 25% working, 75% not working, and running in 'compatability mode', will see a performance BELOW your native 2004 performance.

I would not worry too much about the faulty content. It will show as faulty in the 2010 Content Manager, will show in red in native mode in surveyor in the game and you won't be able to use it. There is a big exercise going on at the moment "the DLS cleanup" which is basically the community fixing old and faulty content and then reloading it to the DLS with the original Author's ID and a new version number. CM can be used to show you what content fixes are available on the DLS as a result.

Before the cleanup started I fixed a good number of content errors on my local copy and got about 95% of them working OK in Native mode. There will always be a small number of faulty assets that can only be fixed by the original author for "technical reasons".

You might want to consider going for a "Fresh Start", just loading TS2010 (quite a lot of 2004/6 content is built into TS2010) and then downloading extra content as you need it. You would probably want to have a First Class Ticket to do this though - a years FCT is on special offer at the moment but offer ends Monday (AUS time presumably).

As for importing from 04, since I have never owned it I cannot comment on the methods of importing or the problems that might arise.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

...thanks guys for your help and suggestions. While I would not like to discard my '04 content, it looks like some, heck, maybe lots of it is going to end up on the "editors floor". I also don't see the advantage to operating in Native mode assuming, as I am being told, it would be worse from a performance point of view than what I now currently have....how strange is that, I ask!!

What I think I will do as itareus suggested. Install '10EE and work from there with moving over from '04 only those items I feel I can't live without. I will get the first class ticket also which I have had in years gone by...works great.

If any of you have any of my routes downloaded and working in '10EE can you let me know what challenges you had with its content or performance.

Just a bit of info about patches to save you hunting around, they can be found here:

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=62766

(confusingly they are in an Auran 2009 directory but they are for 2010).

Take note of the installation comments at the foot of that page. Also be aware that the patch can appear to stop half way through, this is normal - just let it run and it will complete. The worst thing you can do is to cancel a patch as this will probably mean a complete re-install.

I would install, check out the installation, and then patch to the latest version (44088) before importing or downloading any content. Doing this should save you time and potential grief !

Good luck !

I think a little confusion has crept in here, I stated ..........

running in 'compatability mode', will see a performance BELOW your native 2004 performance.

If you run corrected 2004 items in 2010 in 'Native' mode, you should be OK. :D

I run in capatability mode with many unfixed items and the game runs better than when I was using 06. It certainly hasn't slowed my game down. Since I've communicated with you before on a number of things I will be surprised if you like the speed trees. I still use 'Trunda's Trees' on my routes. Its all a matter of taste.
