Advantages and disadvantages - Waiting for auto hot fixes and patches

Hi guys.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of waiting till teething problems are sorted out with hot fixes, patches and the like please.

This is a good one. :)

Advantage....

As you said "Waiting until the early adopters have muddled through the bugs before everyone gets the load on them."

Disadvantages....

Getting a broken patch and being unable to control it.

Getting a patch and finding out there's no room to complete an install.

Changing your mind after you've downloaded a patch and it has already installed. At least the early adopters/manual installers can say, nah I don't want this right now and do it later on when we've got time or feel like it.

Hi guys.

I'd say regarding the TS12 Patch and Hot Fix; its a 100% advantage if you didn't touch it as issues are still being posted.
In general it's always wise to wait and watch as you wisely stated, but that approach should not be soley limited to a program like Trainz; operating systems, graphic card updates, and other various software updates should be applied in the same manner as well. Of course the tricky part is: How long do you sit back and watch?

The disadvantages would be a desired item, feature, or a Trainz route that efficiently operates only if the patch is applied. I guess it boils down to what cons are you willing to accept for the pros.

But what if everyone decides to wait and no one installs it? Never know if its good or bad, lol.

And some who have more confidence in their ability to manage and fix the problems, and who enjoy that challenge. And those, who because they can do it for the eventual benefit of others.

And many thanks to those brave souls, without who not much progress would ever get made.

Ken

Aren't the programmers that created the patches supposed to have fixed the problems rather than the end users, or did I miss something? ;)

they are fixing the problem, but without the ability to try it on more than a handful of machines in the company, or with Just the selection of beta testers things will be missed. we are all only human, even programers, and nothing is perfect. That being said. I am sure they are doing there best to find and fix any problems that are found.

There were some things in TS12 (out of the box) that irritated me like the inability to "grab" controls in a cab when in Cab Mode. Although there was a way around that which the content creator needed to implement.

But, having spent two days getting SP1 installed and then spending another two days getting around problems with Hot Fox 2, I would agree that installing the SP1 and the hot fixes is not for the faint hearted nor those with a short fuse. The old saying "you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs" applies here except that is was more like a truck load of eggs.

I'm sure, and I hope, that N3V are doing some post disaster analysis to work out a better way for future upgrades.

The ordinary Trainz user got off lightly. Many of the content creators are less than happy with the new asset rules.

At the end of all this I believe we have a better product and future releases will be better still. But I like to think I'm an optimist.

You have a choice of course. But somehow I doubt if N3V will put out something that will implement SP1 and the two hot fixes plus whatever comes next, in one package, unless it is TS13/TS14. In that case it would be a new product.

At least you can get SP1 to install. I've been trying for close to 2 weeks with oodles, heaps, and gobs of help from Shane and other kind folks and it simply refuses to install itself.

The two problems I had with SP1 were:

The anti-virus (Trend Micro) (note I also had to disable Windows Firewall for SP2 so I'd disable that at well. Physically disconnect your internet connection if that concerns you)
Some of my txt files that contain "kind" information that had been updated for AssetX purposes caused the install to fail so I removed the updated material and then it worked ok.

Because the install takes so long, I disabled the Windows auto shutdown option and just let it run overnight. The update of the DLC also took most of the night.

Recommissioned 2010: someone opened the scutteling valves, shes a taken on water, and the bilge pumps ain't a helping!

Did you re-commit them or just delete them.
I have hundreds of assets that I updated with Assex.
So I just get rid of them?

They are not assets but text files that reside in the folder ..\ts12\bin\TETData\lists. As an example, one of them contains the various smoke modes, another the various country regions and so on. These files are used by CM (probably) and AssetX to provide lists of available tags in a config.txt.

Some months ago PEV (I think) advised users of AssetX to update some of these text files to include new tags for TS12 SP1 validation. The problem arose when SP1 tried to update those files and found them to be different in content to what was expected. It decided that the files were corrupted and promptly stopped the update and rolled back. So I had to find some original copies of those files to keep SP1 happy.

So if you never changed them you shouldn't need to worry about it.

I went back to pre-SP1 and pre-hotfix 1. Then after the release of hotfix 2, yesterday I gave another try. In Surveyor, when I select a table, the building one or the locomotive one, sometimes the response is so loooong, I'm loosing much time on waiting. I did not have that problem in 49922.

So if your working in Surveyor, you might want to wait. As I did not play much running trains since 3 years, but always worked on a route. Post-SP1 brought many problems I did not have in 49922. In my case, I did not have problems before, now I have. The only thing I like in SP1, is the new filter that gives the possibility to know which installed asset are not on DLS. So I might go back AGAIN to build 49922.

weeeeuuuwwww ...considering all - this dummy is going to wait for the dust to settle then lest I jump in and get whacked...:hehe:
I enjoy my trainz too much to come to a standstill...

I really do not understand all the fuzz about those service packs! Simply make a complete copy of you Trainz folder and patch the second one and that's it.

You can test whatever you want to and if something is wrong work on with the first installation…

Mick!

The "fuzz" IS People go through the trouble of Installing this crap and then it messes up their present Trainz 2012 Installation, It a big pain in the butt to have to go through all of that, When the SP should have worked as advertised, Now that it does NOT ,I think they need to yank it and fix it, then release it When they have vetted it better. Mods Sorry but It's the truth, You guys Blast People Who Criticize Anyone who speaks Negative about this mess and N3V.Sorry if you don't like this statement If the truth hurts ,Say So.
