Adding trackmark to session... hit-or-miss?

When trying to add a trackmark to a session I encounter the following:

1. Route layer must be unlocked (the default), i.e. no trackmark can be added to the session with it being locked.
2. When adding a trackmark a window opens that usually (but not always) shows the route-layer choice pre-selected.
3. Changing that to the session-layer doesn't stick when saving the session: a new route must be saved as well. This is not what I want.
4. Quitting the Surveyor without saving, then opening it again and (still with default unlocked Route layer) repeating item 2. now shows the session-layer pre-selected. Hurray, the trackmark is added to the session, and the session can be saved without the need to create a new route.

But the next time I want to add a trackmark to the session, I have to go through the same procedure again.:(

Is there a way around this?

There are a few things to understand about layers.

1. When you enter Surveyor by editing the session then the session layer is selected by default. When you enter by editing the route, the route layer is selected by default, and if you then save the work, the session will have the same name as the route. The saved session will be different from other sessions that might already be saved.

2. If the route layer is locked then you cannot place objects (or new track) on the map as long as the route layer is selected. Selecting the session layer (in the layers tab) should allow you to place objects and new track, but you will not be able to move existing track or objects that are on the route layer while it is locked.

3. Generally, if you are building a route then you should leave the route layer unlocked. If you are creating a session for a route then keep the route layer locked if you don't want to change anything on the map. As long as the map is not changed you will not have to save the route.

4. If you place an industry on a route layer then you will not be able to set the industry properties while the route layer is locked, even though the settings are stored in the session layer. You can move industries to another route layer that is unlocked in order to change industry properties.

5. Junctions and signals should be placed on a route layer, but not necessarily the main one.

There are many other thing to learn about layers, but that is enough for now.

Hope this helps.
