A train just derailed outside of Pittsburgh

(Reuters) - A train derailed in Pittsburgh on Thursday morning and emergency crews were called, but the accident involved non-passenger cars and no injuries were reported, according to local media.
ABC's Pittsburgh affiliate WTAE said about 10 train cars derailed and that it appeared to be a freight train. NBC's local affiliate WPXI said the rail cars were empty.
Pittsburgh is on the opposite end of Pennsylvania from Philadelphia, where an Amtrak train derailed on Tuesday night, resulting in seven deaths and scores of injuries.

Looks almost like they were pulled over, seeing as they fell into the inside of the curve rather than on the outside of it. Something like that could be caused by two forces pulling in opposite directions at either end of the train as it traveled over that curve, such as the locos at the front and maybe a car or loco at the rear that suddenly stopped while the locos at the head continued pulling.

I read about this accident this morning. It's been all over the internet since the Amtrak accident. It appears to be a non-issue, and probably not an uncommon derailment with a bunch of empty covered hoppers. Now with the Amtrak accident, the media outlets are drooling over train accidents and will search high and low to show how bad the railroads are... Watch and see what I mean.

Yup. Agreed. But to be honest, I think it'll be a good thing.... I'm so tired of hearing about Railroads being ridiculed and defunded.... This is the result when you allow the single largest bulk transportation infrastructure fall this far..... Maybe someone with some money will finally realize this is a bad idea we got running right now....

I heard from the NTSB on the radio that the locomotive was to blame but the engine was brand new and did not have that many miles on it.

Agreed... Just getting tired though of the media making big things out of nothing most of the time.. wait... there's an interview coming up with the ants that lived on the ROW for this freight. They might have more to say on what's going on since they're the closest residents... :)

You're both thinking of the Amtrak accident in Philadelphia. This one is of a freight train in Pittsburgh. The locos pictured look to be older geeps, so this incident was definitely not caused by the "newness" of the loco.

Wow, this week has just not been a good week for the railroad industry. First the Amtrak Derailment, then the Amtrak Engine Fire, and now a freight derailment...

It's sad watching our primary infrastructure crumble around us, watching things break, fail, and kill. I think it's time we start taking the initiative and create a fresh start.

We are the next generation of creators, the creators of what the world can become. Change will come only with work, and for work to happen, we first need to put forth the effort.

How many derailments and collisions do you think there are per hour, per day, per week, per month, per year in the US ... There are plenty which you never even hear of ... I still stand by my statistics that a train, trolley wheel ... etc ... derails every 7 minutes, 24-7-365 in the US. Somewhere a wreck crew is called to a factory spur to re-rail a railcar on the above mentioned statistic. "Every day" is a bad day for US railroads ... we can't keep them on the track ! Some days, and weeks, are just worse than others. Derailments happen "ALL THE TIME" !

Without knowing tonnage, length, MTY's vs loads, etc. wild guess on my part, "The train is on a curve, all the hoppers are MTY and there was a lot of tonnage on the other end and when the engine pulled on the train it just tight lined the empty hoppers over by applying too much power".

Just my guess.
