A Curiosity on Route Performance

Hey all,

Taking on both real mileage and fictional mileage, (FEC Key West Extension and Miami to Fort Pierce), I have stumbled upon something ironic;

1. KWE operates absolutely smoothly, is already pre-laid with 100 miles of track and thousands of square miles of board with about 30 miles covered with the works, and is a monster, but;

2. Real mileage has only reached it's 30 mile mark, with about four miles textured, fixed, and set, but the frame rates are killed!

Would anyone know the somewhat obvious FPS killer here? The grass? The textures? The gradual amount of scenery? Rulers? 10m boards vs. 5m boards?

I am not sure what to make of your post but, I have read that grass is a killer, and NEVER leave a ruler in the route.
 
I stuck in a Save As layout on my FEC Mia-Ftp and pulled the grass and much of the rulers, still doing it as I speak and you guys are right, this is aiding the FPS. As for surveyor equipment, no wonder running a train, it runs smoother.
 
I may be the relative newcomer here, but I have found that grass and trees both will KILL framerates. On my layout, I attempted trees, tried the run in Driver mode and it all but froze up. I dumped the trees, and it went back to normal.
 
I dumped MOST grass but not too much, and the bracketed number if I jump out of the game with the Windows button is in 3-digits again! Thanks all, yes, I think any extreme in scenery with a good no. of polys will kill frame rates.

When you say ruler do you mean the Auran built in distance measurer?
and, if so, Does the same go for Trainz 2006?

if thats what is killing my frame rate im gonna be pist, ive used the rulers practicaly everywhere:hehe:

Get ready to be pist, they are talking about the built in Auran rulers, and yes, it applies to any version.:eek:
 
No help here, just a compliment. Being a Floridian, I feel you have done a good job of getting the look and feel I am so accustomed to. It may sound silly to some, but I have tried in the past to model elements of my home state and find it quite tricky. And the lack of topography means you have to model stuff more distant on flat baseboards to achieve a decent view. Maybe that's why I have stuck to modeling hilly stuff.

I tried to put grass everywhere, like in nature, and it stopped the route from working at all! The limitations of Trainz will not allow for too many polys. And again, the viewing distance is not so good, so why even add things to the board that will hardly even be seen. I for one will never use very much grasses again. Basic repeditive textures is about all the game can handle.

As for trees, I try to limit the number of types of trees to about 5 or 6. Having too many different types of trees will hurt too.

well that makes it easier, i've got a four baseboard route that has over 1,000 rulers, that might be why its acting up.....

Why would you leave 1,000 rulers on your route?

Why don't you just delete the rulers as soon as your done using them?

Just curious....
 
Regarding Number of objects v.s. variety of objects.

I agree with leefer. I use 2009, which is a lot friendlier to "numbers" compared to "variety".

I use one particular "poplar" tree as my "generic" tree. I easily have tens-of-thousands of them on my route. The performance is still quite acceptable but then, I do have a Core2 3Ghz processor with a GTX280.

I think its better to have 10,000 of the same trees on the route than 100 different variety of trees.


Now . . . a 1,000 rulers . . . :eek::o:eek::o ??????

Its a bit of an obsesion, i want to triple+ check to make sure all the distances are prototypical.... when making extremely small route i feel obligated to to make sure everything within the limited space is as close to perfect as possible... ie( check my signature for route:hehe: )

its like a giant jigsaw puzzle from Hell!, if one peice is too big, nothing fits!:hehe:
