A couple Qs from a noob Trains convert

I just got a copy of Trainz off Ebay. Til it gets here, I'd like to start at least learning to make some stuff to use on my route.

For assets, I am thinking Gmax. I am assuming that things should be made actual size, for example, a 10 by 10 shed should actually be 10 feet by 10 feet. If otherwise, please let me know.

The other thing I can use some help with, is making a map. Since I am basing my route on real locations, I would like to convert a topo map to use in the game. I know of two ways of doing that. One is to raise the terrain by hand, using the maps for guidance. But what I would like to do, is turn the topo into a digital elevation map, and use that to make a map closer to the real locations. I saw a couple posts that hinted at doing that, but they didnt spell out exactly how to do it. Can anyone help me with that?

Any help would be much appreciated.

In GMax - and no doubt other creation programs - objects should be made actual size. Be aware that in Trainz, measurements in Surveyor (height adjustment and ground measurements) are in metres so it can be preferable to use the metric system for creation as decimal fractions of a foot can be tricky but not impossible. Having said that, I use both - eg. imperial (yards, feet, inches) when the drawing I'm working from is in that system (as it usually is). Instead of using decimal fractions of a foot, you can type in eg. 6' 0.375" and so on.

One metre = 3.27 feet.

I'm afraid I have no experience with your map query.
