A cool way to build a route

Hi;
Has anyone tried this in TS2010:
Lay out some baseboards (I started with about 100), then hit CTL-Alt-Shift-P. I had to hit the sequence twice. Once gives you the texture but does not start the terrain generator.
You have to move around the layout to get terrain in all areas, or you can leave some areas flat.

I started a route this way yesterday. After I was done letting TS generate the terrain and textures (including trees), I began the task of finishing what TS started. I transformed the small and randomly placed hills into ridges and mountains.
When I get what I wanted, I now have what reminds me of Harriman Park in New York where I love to hike, or maybe the hills of Vermont where I love to ski.

Whether or not I can run a railroad through this terrain remains to be seen. I am certainly going to try, and it will have lots of tunnels and bridges, and many curves. This will most certainly not be a high speed passenger route.

If I am unable to move freight through the route, I guess I'll have to settle for hiking trails:hehe:

It's possible to do this in 09 too. Unfortunately when I try it, it causes my PC to crash! Boohoo.

The whole lot goes south. Saying that, I've changed graphics card since I last tried it so that could help.

Currently running Windows (X)PP on the following system.
AMD 64 dual core 2.7GHz
4G RAM
nVidia 9600GT

Shouldn't be a problem given that I can run graphic rich shooters as smoothly as if they were films. I still find that TS09 suffers a bit of shudder with most of the settings fairly low, even since the addition of the nVidia.

hi

it seems to work ok in 09 check your drivers are up to date and try swaping between open gl and direct x see if this helps.

Thanks guys. Just tried it and found it works. It just doesn't stop. Well, not until I open one of the surveyor tabs. I'll bear that in mind for my next route.

Cheers.

Only bad thing is that it produces too many hills and valleys, not the continuous ridges that I like. But I like it as a start. The fact that I can work with the green texture instead of gray grid and don't have to place all of the trees.
I am using the terrain tools to create the ridges I want.

Is the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P sequence to generate random terrain? I've just started building a route for my kid and I'm not familiar with it but it sounds like a great way to start! Thanks :)

Yes. That's exactly what Ctl-Alt-Shift-P will do. When I started, I had to press the sequence twice before it started to generate terrain and trees.
Then, you move around the layout, as the terrain will be changed only for an area of the route, not for all tiles at once. In this way, you can control how much and where you get the automatically generated terrain. The faster you move through an area, the less it gets to do.

After allowing the program to create lots of those little hills and valleys I have been stretching some into ridges, and other just making larger by connecting more than one hill.

I still have to do a lot to get tracks through. You have to decide how much you want the game to do for you, and how much you want left up to you. The longer you let it run, the more terrain you get.

Hit ESC to stop the process. Make sure you save your creation often.

Pressing the ESC key stops the generation in 09 at least, haven't tried it in 10 but assume it works.

Cheers, Steve.

Can't getr it to work in 06

I've tried all the things that have been mentioned , in 06 and nothing works except walking or flying. Was this not included in this version? 04 does the MMMG thing, but no go in 06
