4-8-2 mountain locomotive sound decoder installation

Does anyone have any idea on how hard it is to install a sound decoder in a bachmann HO-scale USRA 4-8-2 mountain locomotive? thanks!

I usually install a Semaphones Classic Rails Recordings or BigTrainSound CD disk in my stereo CD player, and wake the neighbors. Better sound through six 200watt 15" woofers:p

Well, for steam locomotives with tenders you can all you have to do is look for the holes on the tender floor and they they indicate that the speaker if I'm correct, goes face down and the decoder itself might go in the locomotive but the instructions should show you how it is done if your not sure.

Although I have seen and heard some fantastic Model RR sound systems that are installed in locomotives, coal tenders, and trailing boxcars...they seem too tinnish and low fidelity for my likings.

I went to a train show and they had full size speakers blaring from under the table, and the scene seemed so real at 80db.

The MRC Soundstation 312, and the MRC SyncroSound unit, if amplified using 2 microphones, hooked up to your home stereo provides very high quality sound effects. As too, a RR DVD, CD, video or cassette tape.

I still use HO hook horn couplers and analog DC...lol

Man,that is loud but how about hearing a steam locomotives's whistle & bell at that same setting? I'm sure you would have thought it was the real thing instead of a model train making those sounds! At that setting it is probably just enough to hurt your ears though.

Hi UP5521,

Years ago when I had model railways I used the under table method for sound. I had a big N gauge layout which is almost imposible to put sound in the loco or tender, so what I did was glue a small magnet under the loco and place a tiny reed switch under the track where I wanted the sound to operate. When the loco passed over the reed switch the sound would switch on and continue for a time that was adjustable whith a potentiometer in the main electronic switch. I laso used a similar system for signals.

Cheers,
