3D Modeling

As far as creating locomotives in 3DS Max aka Auto-desk or Gmax did people from Jointed Rail, RRMods, World of Trainz, and many more take any classes or learned on their own? I'm tired of not having what I want so I'm improvising on my own for making my dream locomotives. So what did it take and how long would it take for me although to my time consumed in high school would prolong it but it's whatever. So what should I start out with first and any tutorials would be great.

I dont represent either of those sites. I'm a creator for Trainz Commuter Rail. At first I taught myself how to use 3dsmax, gmax. Now i'm gong to school for Visual Communications and graphics design which will hopefully enhance my 3d skills

Paul Hobbs' tutorials are very good (especially for your first steam loco), but they do assume you already know the basics of gmax.

I still recommend a diesel for a first loco. Diesels are boxey, squares or rectangles while steam locos are rounds, cylinders and all curves which is a lot harder to make. Just my opinion but YMMV.

There are some excellent tutorials out there. Some will say to use Blender while others, like me, will stand by Gmax. Either way, the learning curve can be rather steep, so I'd suggest starting with some simple projects just to get the hang of creating shapes and mapping textures to them. Once you get the hang of that, then move on up to some more complicated shapes and then you'll be ready for some animation, which can cause you to pull all of your hair out until you understand the basics, but once you do, then you're off to the races.

Best of luck to you in your quest. There are many here that will help you along the journey which can only start with that first step.

Mike
