2009 (Build) 38411

I am new to Trainz and just recently received TRS2009 as a gift. I installed and registered it as suggested, but at age 83 I'm beginning to think this might be beyond my capabilities, However, I'll give it my best effort.

For starters, I hope I am in the right place for this post as I already have a question. After installing the 2009 it appears to be fine with no errors indicated, although I really don't know what I'm doing just yet. When opened, it says "Trainz version 3 (Build) 38411".

My question is, does this version need to be updated, or should I continue as it is right out of the box? While browsing Auran's 2009 pages I noticed one patch having 200+ corrections. and thought this might be required.

Appreciate any suggestions or pointing me in the right direction so I can begin my journey into this new adventure. Thank You!

John

Before you run 09' and after it's installed you should install the latest patch for your build number. Bottom right hand corner of the game. Look in auran announcements for the patch you need. When you download it let it run completely. It may take a few hours. In the game settings you want to run in direct x instead of open gl mode. When the game is up and running in the upper left hand corner open options menu and check compadability mode if not already checked. It will take some time to find the best in game settings for you and the game, but don't get discouraged. It's a pretty fun game.

Welcome to the Trainz forums, John and welcome to the world of Trainz.

Once you get yourself settled in and up and running, don't be afraid to ask questions. We will try to help the best we can from most places located around the globe.

As a Trainzer, you'll notice that the real world will slip away as you work on your own creations in Surveyor, or drive the wonderful routes that others have created and posted on the Download Station for us to enjoy.

Friends will call and your family will worry as you ignore the doorbell and telephone calls. You'll become thinner as you forget to eat, and any household chores will go undone as you focus on Trainz. ;) Just kidding of course.

I think there may be other patches. Check the Login options under Internet settings in Trainz. There's a place there to download the automatic patches. There are a couple of smaller patches, Service Pack 1, which is very important, and then the biggest one, which is Service Pack 2. This will bring your Trainz version up to 40047 (I think). This is the highest version unless you've also installed one of the new add-on packs, which have a different version number.

A bit of a warning though, as Alco-PA mentions here, the patching process can take awhile. Let it finish completely. The patcher may look like it's hung up, or stopped working. Let it run, perhaps over night if necessary. The patching process can take awhile, particularly as the patchers take time to uncompress the installation files.

As a hint, when any kind of maintenance is being performed on a computer such as installing patches such as these, I let the computer run while i do something else such as napping, in my case homework, or go off and practice the piano. Periodically, I will check on the program, but for the most part the computer is left to run until the patch as completed, so don't stop the program, or attempt to run something else at the same time.

Good luck, and again welcome to the forums,

another John

AlcoPA & JCitron,

Thank you both for your response and important info. I have tried to install a Service Pack indicating 37625-40040. I thought it was correct for my build (38411) but when attempting to install this SP I received the following notice.

This patch file is not applicable to your current installation version.
(Build hash: 0fa7afa5ba80f8f6b13df2b6547e3ce2).
No valid patch operation was specified. Patching aborted.

I tried again several times using other SPs also, and received the same message. I assume my present Trainz Version 3 (build38411) is current and can proceed to use my 2009 but follow this forum for the next SP to appear.

John,

I think there was an interim patch before SP1. This made some system changes to the base code to all the program to accept future service packs. I maybe mistaken, but I seem to get confused lately. So perhaps I'm off on an other planet again! I'm sure other people can help you as well.

All Trainz service pack files have two numbers in their filenames. The first number must match precisely with your current build number. The second number is the build number that will result after applying the service pack.

John259, JKinsel & Spiffy,

I appreciate your suggestions and have downloaded the proper patch to bring my recently purchased 2009 up-to-date from build 38411 to build 40040. When the 2009 was purchased at a local software establishment, the salesman suggested I check Trainz online for the possibility of a recent upgrade as this DVD had been in his store for several months. That is how I became a member here. Thanks again!
