Across the Years

Ferrous

Going...going...
Post any any pics that you have depicting the same location over time! :D

I'll start:

The same location over a period of 60-some-odd years...

1943: An ACL E7 A-B-A set leads a train of Sherman Tanks towards Birmingham to be shipped to Europe. Note the 0-4-0 switcher on the turntable preparing to work the yard...

1967: In the wake of the SAL/ACL merger, a pair of former SAL geeps leading an ACL E7B bring the 10:00 general freight from Jacksonville across the junction en route to the newly formed SCL's 32nd Street Yard in Birmingham...

Date unknown, presumed to be ca. 1989-1991: A CSX Geep wearing the YN1 paint scheme leads an ex-Family Lines SD40-2 with a train of emptys towards Boyle's Yard in Birmingham where they will be serviced and sent out with a loaded train. It's unlikeley that the SD40-2 (or indeed the SW1500 on the turntable) will carry her former owner's paint for long...

2008: An SD70ACe wearing CSX's "Dark Future" scheme leads a tired old Dash-8 and SD on a general Freight en route to Birmingham from Jacksonville. Sadly, the roundhouse in the background is no longer in use. As you can see, the line hasn't changed much, but the trains travelling it sure have...

Thats pretty cool....I'll have to give that a shot and make something up like that....Very nice :D

And now for some North-of-the-Border action! :D

1954: It's a busy day at Toronto Union Station! (Left-Right) On the first track, a CN U2g Northern is just getting underway with an Express to Montreal. Meanwhile, the Canadian has just pulled in, as passengers disembark before the train heads to get serviced. Just one track over, a pair of RF-16's prepares to depart with the CP express to Ottawa. Just behind the sharks, A CN mike idles with the local waiting for the Express to clear the line. On the far right, a pair of CN RDCs slip into the station, having just completed their run.

2008: It's a similarly busy day at Toronto Union. The skyline and trains may have changed, but the traffic sure hasn't! (again, left to right) A GO train waits for clearance to depart. A few tracks over, the Ocean just sounded the all aboard and is about to depart with some unusual power on point. One track further over, a CN GP35 switches a private car onto the end of the Westbound Canadian. And on the far right, another GO train quietly slips in to the station, having finished its run through the suburbs.

Putnam CT throughout the years. Unlike Ferrous' first location that seemed to be untouched by time, father time took a toll on this location.

1950ish: The yard is packed today. On the left an alco switches a small cut of cars, in the middle a passenger train heads north to Worcester MA, on the right a freight train shoots by on its way to Hartford CT. The green alcos will soon be repainted into the McGinnis scheme.
nh1.jpg

1955: A hurricane hit causing a devastating flood. The flood took out several rail lines that were never rebuilt.
flood1.jpg

1960: Two New Haven RDCs pass by on their daily run to New London CT.
nh2.jpg

1971: Passenger service has been discontinued in the area and Penn Central now operates the line. Train traffic has been very low in this area ever since the highway was built.
pc.jpg

1979: The Providence & Worcester Railroad has taken over most of the former Penn Central and Boston & Maine lines. Those two boxcars behind the loco were in an accident not two long after this photo was taken.
Screen_722.jpg

2006: The track on the right is being lowered so the P&W can run intermodel trains through here.
Screen_721.jpg

2008: With gas prices rising more and more people are traveling/shipping by train. Rail traffic is slowly starting to pick up on the line.

things have been going bad for this town, they lost their passenger service in the 60's and the steel mills have long been torn down, the rails are usually quiet like the town, except when the washingtonian comes through(note the car)
