i am looking for info on how milk, butter, pigs and assorted grains and vegetables were transported by rail in the early 1960's in south east qld country
ron
Ron, first of all I will suggest how it was really transported and rail was not a big part of the answer. Short answer was rubber tyre trucks after war surplus trucks, especially after WW2 war surplus trucks became available.
The 1955 road maps [Shell] at my photobucket site shows more roads than rail within 150 miles of Brisbane. Many of the branchlines in that area were starting to close due to lack of use eg Marburg, Fassifern, Canungra, Dayboro', Tweed Heads, Mulgowie, Beaudesert apart from stock and occasional butter. The Brisbane Valley line lasted a bit more. Darling Downs lines also started to lose traffic.

The legendary cream road truck was developing in the 1930s. The local farmers were prepared to fit a stock grate to the back of their Morris, Austin, Studebaker, Dennis or Bedfords. These also carried the assorted grains and vegetables. Since they had to carry it from farm to railway station, they soon realised it was just as easily to get the local trucking mob to take it all the way to the Brisbane markets.
One of the people behind the road transport industry on the Darling Downs was John Cyril Anderson, (1904–1983). In 1934 he acquired a Studebaker truck to fetch supplies from Brisbane for the grocery business. The enterprise soon expanded into a general carrying business, later named Western Transport Pty Ltd. Another reason the many rail branch lines started closing in the era and region you are researching was due to the road tax win for truckers ie the Hughes & Vales case and Section 92 of the Constitution. State taxes soon followed in stages.
