Railfanning In North Carolina

Hey everyone, me and my dad are taking a trip to central N.C. (Staying in Lexington, northeast of Salisbury, and probably Mt. Airy as well) and V.A. (Roanoke and Charlottesville). I've never been to either of these areas, and I'm curious if anyone knows any must-see railfanning spots and such in these areas. I know we'll be going to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, but beyond that, I really don't know much as far as railroads go... Any help or advice would be appreciated!

I am not sure if this is still in North Carolina but there is something that looks like the Bombardier M7 dmu's. Bombardier built a dmu version of the LIRR M7 for the Triangle Transit Authority in North Carolina.
