Thought I'd make a rare post here to duplicate a post I made over at the Rail Simulator forums, and let you know about a couple of great programs you can currently get absolutely free:

There's something much better than Fraps IMHO, and that's SnagIt.
You can get SnagIt7 absolutely free legally with the limited offer at http://www.updatexp.com/free-snagit-download.html
It does a lot more than take snapshots.

Another good freebie is Camtasia Studio 3.
You can get Camtasia Studio 3 free legally from the same site at http://www.updatexp.com/free-camtasia-studio-3.html
Captures video and allows editiing of movies too.

Credit to Paul Boland for the links (on a programming website we both frequent) to these great programs, and to the people who originally told him about them, who I forget now.

Using Camtasia with TRS2006

I successfully tried this free version of Camtasia to capture some Youtube videos as a test.

But when I try to make videos of the entire screen when running TRS2006 all that I get after pressing F9 is a black screen which Camtasia then captures as a video.

Has anyone successfully used Camtasia to capture videos from Trainz and, if so, what is the secret?

I think Camtasia has an option to disable the video hardware for extended DX modes. Of course, you can always use Fraps, which can capture full screen in any mode.
 
I think I tried that and it didn't help (disabling the hardware). I have bought FRAPS and it does work. I wanted to see if Camtasia gave better resutls or not.

Yes, I recall now that you also have to disable hardware acceleration with the system's video card slider.
 
I use GameCam. No link sorry.
Its a great program I've made many movies with it. Never tried in Trainz though...
 
I tried using GamCam but it just makes 3/4 of the screen black :( .

You're lucky! When I play those damn videos my ENTIRE screen is going pitch black! :eek: Every single one I tried had a problem with Trainz (2004).

-Fraps: Recording no more than 30-40 seconds.

-CamStudio: Black Screen + Blue Screen of Death.

-Very likely that the next ones are going to do the same...:'( .

Unfortunatly, I Haven't been able to record so much...:(

P.S. I know there's alot of smilies...:hehe:
 
GameCam works fine in Trainz for me, except the sound did not work when I played back the video. Does the free version of GameCam only allow 45 second videos?
