Getting Google Earth data with TransDEM?

So, I heard somewhere that you can use Google Earth data with TransDEM to make routes with Google Earth elevation, is this true? I am still tinkering around with TransDEM and wanted to know.

Google earth can be used as follows:
1 Focus in on the area of interest and ensure the View is vertical (use the reset Tilt setting) Pan in to get the level of detail you want.
2. Save the Image to a specific folder on your PC as say 'Pic1'
3. Add a geo pin to the image and save that as Pic1 in the same folder.
4 In TransDEM - open the Pic1 image, select the Geodreference Goolge Image menu option selecting the Pic1 GeoPin.
5 Select convert to UTM format and then save the resulting georeferenced image to your folder.

All this is decumented in the TransDEM manual.
Using TransDEM you then connect all the georeferenced images together and save a combined file showing the whole area of your route.
This image can then be overlaid onto a DEM file for the area also using TransDem Im not aware of being able to get ground elevations directly from Google Earth though.
Try to get a DEM file of the highest definition if possible.

TransDEM provides functions to add Track splines, Roads, Fences, ground textures, etc, Build UTM tiles to add and create a Trainz route which is then opened in Surveyor to complete the build.

You need to experiment and test all this before attempting a serious project as though its a bit involved the results are worth the effort.

Good luck

Go thru the tutorial. TransDem "imports" data in a couple of different formats. The better the data, the better your final results.

It's also a good idea before uploading your map to a baseboard, to create a named layer for your map assets. Then once your topography detailing is complete, then the respective layer can be deleted, thus freeing up more data space for other important assets,
Cheers,
