You Are What You Write

I have made a decision. . . I will no longer respond to ANY posts or threads that contain gross SPELLING or GRAMMATICAL errors. With a couple of exceptions for a couple of Trainzers who are handicapped, I feel there is absolutely no excuse for some of the really terrible spelling, grammar, and sentence structure I have seen lately on these forums.

Surely most of us have at least a sixth grade education and (in my day at least) by the time we made it through the sixth grade, we knew how to spell and write grammatically correct sentences. If you have no concept of how to write a legible and clear sentence, how do I know you can create a nice route or well-made assets? If you don't take the time to format a clearly understood post or thread, how do the rest of us know that you will take the time to create a well-made and decent asset for trains?

If a poster writes: "yes, i WIL do a resken for yoou uf a uNien Pasiffic lomotve." Can you imagine what the reskin will look like??!

Of course, this is just my opinion. If the rest of you want to overlook such terrible English, so be it. But I won't be reading or answering any such threads or posts.

Have a nice day,

Dave

Please, Go crawl back under your bridge.
Some of us are younger, And have spelling issues ok?

Well i do believe if the students are allowed to graduate that were the ones who goof off, doodle, sleep, talk, and pass notes (out dated, they text now) and managed to make it through school without being held back and never managed to learn the vital skills and were still pushed through to graduation. yeah that's the schools fault
but they will most likely drop out and hang out at 4chan, not at trainz!
I know a lot of people that are valued members of society that cant spell very well, or use bad grammar! but by all means keep expecting everyone to be perfect! You must be a sucker for disappointment.
oh look i made a spelling error! Everyone knows trains isn't spelled with a z!

No, I just know it's people's nature to blame others rather than themselves, Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

Sure, schools deserve some blame, especially if they knowingly graduate illiterates. Parents too. But, last time I checked, schools generally don't force you to text or sleep in class.

Yes, but can they stop this? Yes they can, but now we expand to see yet again another problem, Our schools are mere social status place rather than a place of education...

I would say the blame is the educational system 25% parents 75%.
I also agree 100% with you on that human nature is to blame others and not take responsibility for your own actions, Tristis Est Sutem Vera!
But making a big deal here about is not going to change anything at all. You may go and beat your head against a brick wall, you're more liable to make more progress with that!

13 years in the Chicago Public School system I learned to keep my blade sharp and the release spring oiled, watch my back and stay close to windows and doors so I could get out in a hurry when the riot started. I'm a ghetto rat who taught myself to read and write, so I don't see poor education as an excuse. In most cases it's just plain laziness, I can see mispelling in a forum post, but if I was going to register on a forum as (for example) "IronHeart" I would at least use a dictionary to look up the spelling instead of registering as "ironharh" thinking that was close enough.

I honestly don't have a problem with ADHD kids who can at least focus long enough to follow instructions even if I sometimes have to repeat myself, and bad spelling is okay with me provided the meaning is clear enough - example "my mom resonantly (last Sunday) installed a wireless printer", in context it's clear that "resonantly" means "recently", one mispelled word in a sentence doesn't hurt that much. bot wenn ta hole thgn iz worng itt bekumz to paynfil two avin trai 2 figuar it owt sew fuggedaboudit.

I'M ADHD actually, I don't use it as a crutch like most people do. I managed to graduate from high school an then go to college. Become a lasik surgeons assistant, helping people to see it what i do! I can't allow my ADHD to interfere with my job, I could end up costly for me and could damage the patients eyes severely! When I'm not working I do let my guard down and my ADHD can show through especially in my post. I post way to soon without proof reading! Oh well ill get over it, look at that i already am!

Well that's what I'm talking about - there are a bunch of spelling and punctuation mistakes in that paragraph, but it's not really hard to read and understand. What I'm talking about, and I suspect most people agree, is when the spelling is so bad you read it over 20 times and still can't figure out what the guy is trying to say.

I've got asperger's syndrome and dyspraxia so i've got two learning disabilities to put up with, but i'm around animals most of the time so they do not cause me any problems 50% of the time, but when i'm around people i can't concentrate on what i'm and i also panic when i'm talking to a person on the phone yet when talking to a person face to face i'm okay apart from eye contact issues.

What I am now trying to say is that if the people here with poor grammar and bad spelling didn't make an effort to learn it in school, why would they listen to a bunch of names that post their opinions on a forum?
All you are to them is a name that types words somewhere in the world, not very influential if you ask me!

Enough of the flame wars please.

Spelling and grammar are important but when it comes to criticising people for it, I see no point in it.

Spell-checkers are a way of ensuring good spelling but I'll probably be picked up on for something. Maybe I should mention Russian is my first language and English my third after Finnish.

Regards

A somewhat annoyed Johan

...Enough of the flame wars please...

Just what I was thinking, lets all take it easy and respect the views of others (and that's a two way thing) no need for heated arguments here folks, by all means express your opinion but don't do it in such a way as to to provoke arguments (AKA "Flame Wars").

Well, your response to respond negatively isn't helpful to anyone Dave. As a teacher for 50 years, I learned diplomacy will yield more than "shutting down", in the face of something you might see as an irritation. Try to respond positively to
a poorly spelled phrase, or poor grammar in a student, or a forum member. Now you have them on your side. Help them with the immediate problem, or look at his reskin. Consequently you can suggest more constructive ideas about grammar and spelling. Eventually they will realize it's to their benefit, and to the Trainz community. We all respect your decision, and opinion, of course Dave. Just a few ideas you might consider. "yes, i WIL do a resken for yoou uf a uNien Pasiffic lomotve.", a perfectly understandable sentence. I would certainly look at his work, lest you pass up a possibly "genius" creation. Cheers to all.

Chuck

Hmm I cannot resist to give my humble opinion about History repeats itself over thousands of years only Darwin was right about living things on this earth evolve and adapt only humans do not if you ask me.

what did the romans teach us, similar to the egyptians, chinese, or any other ancient 'great' culture from the past?
Simple and stRaight forward learn from history no to make the same mistakes ........ Their downfall and why they disappear most for the same reason and obvious: greed, power, war, pests, politicians and bankers:hehe:, climate change as usual we could go n for a while.
I personally think we should close this thread enough gossipped and not meant personally to anyone like dar Ed said chatspeak leetspeak cool thing but I could not imagine them at programming anything with the same attitude nothing would work properly, so it must be difficult and tiring to keep up 2 different speeds and ways of communication.
This all said from my hotel bedroom and first ever entangled in local gossip corner haha I cannot believe myself see me doing this.
Well everything has its first time my mom always said she is now 94 I guess and still send me from Europe handwritten letters so clear and flawless, I very humble each time bow and say WOW mom!!!
She keeps up her spirit, body and thrive to do the best she can and what a result. hat is what we learn from our parents.
to end with anold saying from where I came from (born) "we are the mirror for our children".
I rest my case.
you all have a nice day.
Ning and I have a nice week off without the animals.... Miss them though very much, hmm just a few more days and back home, that is what you call holiday

Yes, but what have the Romans ever done for us?

This is exactly what I think as well, Jim. The other thing, which I forgot to mention before, by using proper grammar and spelling we are all helping those that are not native English speakers. By using the proper language they can better understand what we're saying and contribute more to our community. Although, I must add, many of the non-native English speakers also write much better than many of those that are.

To the others talking about their conditions and disabilities:

I have atypical parkinsonism meaning that I have some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease but not all of the "cardinal signs". The overall prognosis for something like this is not good either, but I don't dwell on that. Anyway there are days when I'm on the forums where I can barely read the text because my eyeballs twitch back and forth (it's called horizontal nystagmus). There are also times where I can barely type due to stiffness and tremor. When I type I end up hitting the backspace more than there are words in a simple sentence.

What I do though is take my time and try my best to ensure what I type is the best I can offer. If you noticed, I underlined and bold-faced take my time. This I think is the bigger part of the issue here. Take the time to read what's been typed and fix the mistakes before hitting the post quick reply button.

John

Then learn, autocorrect and grammar checkers are on most internet browsers, and if you're not sure, copy the word and paste it into a google search, it'll tell you the definite definition and it'll show you how to spell it if you spelled it incorrectly. You're just using excuses to hide your laziness...

I am not native english speaker and met my wife Ning some 8 years ago. Not one word english and after a few years she speaks pretty well to very well english ask Deane(dinorius_redundicus). I teached her by not speaking thai with her so no chance for her to fall back on thai...
