You Are What You Write

Did you make a spelling error there (Internet Exploder?) or was that on purpose? Also Safari, which I use, accepts single letters as words, so if I accidentally put r instead of or it wouldn't give me a red line and I might not notice.

Surprised to read that some are still using Internet Explorer, which has to be the slowest browser in the world... ;) ( Chrome user, and Chrome has spell checker)

I could also again toss in my complaint on goofy subject structure.

Ignoring the spell checker is a sign of a sloppy person and, as Dave noted, undoubtedly is reflected in their other work.

There is a sort of a hierarchy - How you look, how you smell, how you speak and how you write. I am still struggling with number 1.

PS: I have many megabytes of Dave Snow creations.

Your brain is great and you're far from having a close relationship with Alzheimer..

There is people out there Mr.Dave that lack the proper education, There are Children and Adults that seem as if they lack proper elementary structure but know technology fairly well because that is what America seems to be Based upon anymore, so if someone spells and has foul language of a sort on here what I would do is just lower the blood pressure for a minute and ask who ever is the one that spells or says these incorrect things to please do some research within the proper word structuring and capitalization of road names of these sorts that have the Trainz issues that they wish to discuss.

I wonder if this also implies to alcoholics who often make such poor judgments while at the keyboard ? Or are they in the category of "They Are What They Drink" and are therefore excluded. :p

Sad that poor spelling and grammar seems to have become the norm on Internet chat and forum discussions. Sometimes it feels like losing battle and then this beacon of light shines through the gloom. :)

Just to keep in spirit, it's a LOSING battle, not "loosing". We will "except" no grammar "accept" the correct grammar, so we don't get lose and loose confused with their there they're. :wave:

What makes you think that typing on a a keyboard and staring at a screen is a natural form of writing.
Of course you will get dozens of errors in even a few sentences
1. If you have not learnt to type you wil get a myriad of errors typing with two fingers.
2. All communication before the typewriter and keyboard was by the written hand, and if you read the messages on letters and postcards written in the Edwardian and Victorian ages you will find very few errors in spelling.

B a Former Trainz mariner. Happy sailing on Trainz to one and all. My advice is if possible always use quill and parchment for communication.

Get it write!

I would respectfully draw your attention to the comma used in the last sentence of your first paragraph.

I have concerns about its use.

The, “and”, which immediately follows the comma, is clearly not being used as a coordinating conjunction. In such a case the use of a comma would, or course, have been entirely correct.

Therefore, to the best of my knowledge, that only leaves its possible use as a serial comma, but has it been appropriately used?

Until this matter is resolved I shall remain somewhat reluctant to further participate in this thread.

While I will say that there are people that lack education, lets face it, we are all using computers. There is a certain implicit aptitude to learn that is shown simply by being here on the forums. The fact that you can post messages in the forums indicates that you have the ability to operate a computer and use the web browser. The fact that you can post with 50% (or more) of your words misspelled when the computer highlights what mistakes you have made yet you blatantly don't care to fix it is what floors me. If your using the wrong words in you're sentences, the computer won't tell you it is wrong (yes, this sentence is intentional, and it pained me to type it!!). I am more understanding of that, but it irks the hell out of me that spell checkers are purely mechanical and some people refuse to use them.

In a list of items separated by commas, the comma preceding the "and" is optional. It is correct both ways. (At least in our Yankee bastardization of the native tongue:hehe:)

Having taught 1st and 2nd grade reading classes to kids with various abilities, disabilities, attitudes and levels of motivation, this is one of my favorites;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDFQXxWIyvQ

I really don't mind bad spelling, grammar, or punctuation provided the meaning is clear without having to work at it. Some of the younger kids here don't spell, capitalize, or punctuate very well, but some do get the question with all the needed details. To help somebody, the hurdles that have to be jumped over;

1. Is the meaning of the question clear, and are enough details provided? KUID number and where you got the asset you're having trouble with are the most often things left out even with perfect spelling.
2. Is the person asking the question intelligent enough to understand answers and follow directions? Poor spelling, grammar, and punctuation usually creates the impression that they're not, so many people just skip trying to help. Posting in the Freeware Announcements forum is the worst, if the guy is too dumb to find the right forum to post in you might as well answer "You're too stupid to play computer games, go try Nintendo".
3. Does the person have sufficient basic computer operating skills to do the technical work? Just because they can type a message on a forum doesn't necessarily mean they do, unlike 30 years ago computers come with the operating system already installed and configured so it's just point, click, type. They even renamed directories to "folders", and File Manager became "Explorer", so you no longer navigate directory trees to manage files, you explore folders to browse files. For me that's a bigger difficulty than spelling, explain how to do something in simple terms and it turns out the person doesn't even know the basics of copying and pasting.

It can be frustrating, so the really hopeless ones with the bad attitudes go on my ignore list.

Who would have thought that participation in a Trainz forum would require an education. :o To those who frequent other forums, do they also go on about these language details?
