Yet another Russian rip-off?

Ancient Trainzer
Passengers by pleigox3 (Alexandr Andreevich Klimanov aged 16) appears to be a straight copy of the built-in passengers. One for N3V to deal with in this case I think.

Another one? I have a feeling that N3V are going to have to check the DLS content of all Russian users at this rate.

I'd suggest also sending Helpdesk a message about it as well.

Shane

Shane, have you noticed that the animated people thumbnails which seem to have nothing to do with the asset are the same ones bort85 used? Same guy I'm guessing or someones cloning his removed stuff and uploading it again.

That would not suprise me. N3V need to take action quickly, and as before I'd advise that any users who believe their content has been illegally cloned check on the Download Station, then contact Helpdesk if needed.

Shane

I already sendet a e-mail to N3V about Pleigox3 . I tried to download a pass.car with a missing dep. Googling brought me to Trainz up but no dep. to find

More out of curiousity, as I have very little of my own creations on the DLS, what would a user look for? Content with the same title or description?

Another One!?

Wow --- these guys have no skills or imaginations to create their own stuff I see!!??

They are given legit russian creators a bad name!

It is sad!!!

It's usually in the thumbnail, although the title and/or description can give it away. Failing that, ask on the forums.

Should N3V have some form of uploading accreditation.
Those creators that have already unloaded items automatically gain accreditation. Members wishing to gain accredited have to first upload screenshots or start a thread in freeware to allow forum members to make any comments about the creators work. Obviously this system will cause a delay for new creators but it may be time for N3V to step in but leave it up to forum members to monitor. Just a suggestion

There's a few ideas on one of the other threads about this problem, the trouble with using the forum is that many Trainz users never even use the forums for whatever reasons, parental controls, don't like forums, didn't know one existed and probably never registered for the forum, some only appear for help and then vanish never to be seen again.
Although the numbers of cloned items recently has been large, it's only a few people doing it, solve that problem and I think we can live with the system as it is and accept there may be the occasional infringement or error made, as there was before Multiplayer appeared.

This isn't Russian, but recently I downloaded a file called K3LA for SW1500 or something like that and it was the K3LA already included for TS2009 and TRS2006 for the SD70 units. Same horn, same bell.

You might be right Malc but we will see how well N3V deal with the matter after the event. This latest young author has probably not used the Forum much and might not realise that there is anything wrong with what he is doing. It does seem rather strange that anybody is allowed to upload to the DLS.

Ultimately, the only thing that is going to stop the illegitimate uploads is if N3V disable the cloning feature in Content Manager.

Shane

Guess if anything is done it's going to be in the next Trainz release only that still leaves old versions, unlikely they are going to release patches for all the versions, brings us back to the DLS as the one common point.

Whilst I agree with the general feeling about uploading cloned content without the original creator's permission, I am totally against the proposal to disable cloning in CM.

I have found cloning to be one of the most effective ways of error fixing faulty content and there are many assets which I have corrected and created by modifying the clone. Why should all of us suffer because of a couple of people who ignore the rules.

Surely a better way forward would be if N3V investigated complaints about plagiarised assets not just from the original creator but also those reported by helpdesk ticket from say two or more other forum members.

As probably do most of us, I even clone my own stuff so I can reuse the configs. I also clone my own stuff when testing modifications and such
Been thinking about it and wouldn't work anyway.
As long as you can open an asset for edit, you can copy the folder to say desktop, change the kuid to yours and drag back to CM and voila! a cloned asset.
To stop cloning you have to block editing, bad idea as nothing will ever get fixed, the DLS repair gets abandoned you can't change hornsounds engine sounds etc, no reskinning for personal use etc etc.

Whatever they do or don't do it's not going to be retrofitted to all the stuff on the DLS or all versions of Trainz,
I honestly think we are stuck with the problem unless something is done to restrict Multiplayer requirements for clones in some way and the only way I can see of doing that is they are only permitted to use original builtin assets. That of course would go down like a lead balloon amongst the majority of MP users who are not mass cloning and also do not deserve punishing for the actions of a few.

I propose, that N3V shall check especially the babbling of Technical and DirectX Advisors, who are Not affiliated with N3V for the offensive nonsense they spread...

Mick!

Mick, that was rude and uncalled for. What everyone else in this thread has said, has made a lot of sense. The point of this forum is to circulate ideas and offer suggestions for improvements to Trainz, Auran.com, the Download Station, and Auran Forums. For Shane to do so in this thread is not "offensive nonsense".

On topic, there should definitely be an additional check procedure that scans assets on the DLS for high levels of similarity, flags possible clones, and notifies the creator of the original copy to either approve or disapprove the asset. (Such a notification would say something like "Hey, this new asset might match your asset on the DLS, here's a link to download it for manual comparison. Do you approve of this upload? [Yes, I approve/Yes, this is not a clone/No, I do not approve]). Cloned assets should be marked as such on the DLS and Content Manager, with links to the original copy. In fact, there should be a new "clone-of" tag in the config for all assets that are marked in this way, which is automatically added in the DLS cross-check.

I like the idea proposed by Scottbe8 - anything that can reduce the illegal clones (if not stopping them completely) has got to be a good idea.

Shane

P.S. Mick - I actually get on very well with N3V, even to the point of assisting them at times.
