Hi all I have Trainz Platinum 2019 and I am many many hours into building a layout, what I would like to know if there was a problem with my computer or software and had to reinstall or to go back to factory reset or I had to purchase a new PC would all my work be lost even after reinstalling Trainz? Or would my sessions still be there once Trainz was installed................Thanks

Yes you would lose everything

Saving "Back-Ups" of your PC files, the Trainz Game, all your routes, downloaded CDP's, and assets, are easy to do on external hard drives.

Basically my PC disc space is nearly empty of all files, and my 2 external 1-3 TB Hard Drives have all my backups of millions of stuffs on them, including my Game.

I have handwritten log books to remind me of where all my stuff is located.

For T:ane and TRS2019 you can create a new installation and after the install is completed you can change the installation details so that it uses the original database. So everything would be exactly as it was before you re-installed.

Whether or not that would actually work depends on why you need to reinstall - if it's because your system corrupted your data then obviously the data would still be corrupted after the reinstall.

1.) First thing you need to do is start backing up all your computer files, immediately. There must be thousands of web articles telling you how to do this.

2.) Next, get a good piece of software that will make a "Bootable Clone" of your Windows or Mac disk. I have a bootable disk that I carry with me when I leave the house. This is in case of fire or theft at home. A job runs each night to "clone" my main internal disk to this external clone.

3.) Learn about Trainz "files" specifically. cdp's, game created backups, your data folder, etc. Know that freeware and payware can always be re-downloaded if absolutely necessary, but your own created files (Routes, Sessions) must be carefully exported/backed up in a knowing and dedicated manner.

4.) If you don't backup you will regret it one day.

I have a few large capacity external hard drives where I keep photos so know how to get them from pc to HD is it the same for routes ect. IE just move them across or is it more complicated.

You can move the whole database like you would move your whole photos folder. To move individual routes you need to export them from within Trainz. You can export as a folder (so that one folder contains the route) or you can export as a CDP file so that the route is contained in one file. A route does not include the assets used in the route, so you may need to also move a bunch of assets, for instance if you have collected them from third party sites or if you have modified assets that you want to keep.
