Wondering if it is just a Marklin fantasy wagon or real as I have never yet seen it

Hi all. maybe you can shed some light on this for me. In Z scale Marklin I often see these three-barrel wagons Marklin 48928 2-axle Wood Barrel Car w/Cabin Modellbahn Treff- NEW w/Box Limited | eBay
Was this a real wagon? I've not seen one in trainz, nor a photo of a real on yet. I have seen many times the two-barrel types and M69 has made several very well done of this type. Just never seen the three-barrel Marklin version

Hey there!

I've got to be honest, that was quite a hard one. Albeit living right where they were supposed to run and working as an engineer for the german railroads, i have never seen one in my entire life. Not on pictures, and not restored in a museum or running. What i could find, is this: The wine areas around my Home here (Württemberg/Pfalz, eg. Mainz, Speyer and so on) used one and two barrel cars from 1910 into the mid 20's. Cars with one barrel usually carried white wine, while the ones with two carried red whine. Due to beeing stolen quite a lot, these things were soon abandoned and replaced by covered cars or just plain boxcars with barrels packed inside. This was a time back here, when literally even the smallest company could get its own railcar and let them haul by the state railways, so there existed a ton of different designs for ever purpose and company specification. The three barrel car was one of them, apparently beeing used by only 2 or 3 wine companies out of hundreds, so it was quite rare even back then:

Hope that helps a bit

Ah yes!
the German farm wines around Mainz. Small production (compared with the giants), only available from the farm…
Never appeared in the UK unless you had a friend bring some back.

my favourite was “Wasem”…
anyone want to send over a tank?

Next week I think I'll post two more versions of the twin barrels. :)

About the 3 barrels the flachwagen does not have the same chassis and on the other hand I have some pictures of them but miniature versions that I don't know if they existed.
Tomorrow I'll look for them and put them here in case someone can tell us something about it.

The first three are for wine and the last one for beer (see the totally cylindrical barrels).
I really don't know if they existed although I think there is a high possibility of it.
