Wishing the UK well on Wednesday...

It IS interesting, AJ. Here in the U.S., if it isn't covered by the New York Times, and, to a lesser extent, the Washington Post, and AP affiliates, then it doesn't exist. Far more than most people realize.

My limited exposure to the US media suggests that the perceived wisdom is that if it doesn't happen in the US it doesn't exist. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

That's why I didn't close the thread even though it has nothing to do with Trainz directly. I just hope it doesn't come to the point where that is necessary.

Cheers

I certainly mis-typed 1920's for 1930's! Union membership was once 11 million so the decline cannot all be attributed to just those working. They didn't need enemies they were sufficent at that themselves. I can remember the constant bickering and striking in the shipyards up here about who did what and while they constantly striked others got on with building ships to our detriment Much the same happened in other heavy industry making it all priced out the world game, Just over a mile from where I live there was once a giant tyre factory and it was constantly having striked for more of this and more of that and eventually it was closed by the company. It is now a retail park.

Too much of the time when we rather pointlessly had big industries in State ownership iut was a case of jobs for life and a cuhy life. As modernisation started coming in they were shown to be well over-manned. The Unions had to be dragged screaming into modern times and after so long with And all those General Secretaries with their fat-cat 6 figure sum salaries. I bet they don't get docked pay when members come out? Secret ballots for General Elections for into two centurieswe finally got it for the Unions as well as the closed shop being thrown out. Small wonder the TUC was often shown in cartoons as a carthorse dragging an old cart! Talk about a new kind of Luddite?!

Unions are a reat thing in principle of course but they have lost their way and forget we live in a different type of society than in the early years. As for railways we can argue the pros and cons of State run or Publlic but we only have them because of private initiative. Even governments that were allied to the Unions did little to improve them and the biggest disaster of over the top closures was under State control.

The country does not simply have a prob due to the bankers which is a handy excuse although they contributed to the matter. We had government which ovewrspent without much to show for it hence the biggest deficit in our history. So governments which only have our money not their own hasd to spend wisely so those that work for it must come to accept that their employer has only so much tax revenue so why should civil servants and others be more immune than say military who have lives threatened, etc? People are living longer and active longer so they have to get used to the real world of the rest us in the majority. Do they appreciate our contributions to their pensions? nope.
