Windows 8 & Trainz12 with the addition of Trainz10 - is there a conflict?

I'm one of the most patient people I know... it comes as a necessity to my current situation.
However, I'm losing not only my patience, but possibly also the will to live.

This is the current response from my computer from attempting the above:

This patch file is not applicable to your current installation version.
No valid patch operation was specified. Patching aborted.

Really, I don't deserve what Trainz simulator throws at me. And I'm not convinced I can cope with it much more....

Please help!!!!! :'(

That message often means it's looking at the wrong Trainz install or it's the wrong patch.
Right click the patch and select run this program as administrator, the installer should appear, at the top it will show the path to the Trainz install, this will default to the last version you installed, I'm guessing that was TS12, click the little dot at the end of text box that contains the path, the file manager will open, browse to where TS2010 is installed, probably Program Files x86\N3V\TS2010 and click on Trainz.exe then run the patcher.

Thanks Malc, fingers crossed, it looks like its at least thinking about doing the patch now, although, I will believe it when I see it... Time will tell.

Note what I said about the length of time it will take, also please don't stop it.

To add take no notice of the progress indicator, it stays in the same place until the last few minutes, as Fran says please don't cancel it, it may take a long time and appear to be doing nothing.

Delticfab- Sorry for your troubles. I must say something about Windows 8 and building routes. I say this to you. (and for anyone in Windows 8), just in case all is working again and the your son is busy making routes and finds himself back at the desktop/or start screen for Windows, (depending on your personal set-up)...... Unless you see a box saying (basically) that the Trainz program had to close, Windows will try to repair the problem blah blah.... If you do not receive that box, or something similar from Windows, then it's a problem I have frequently. It's caused when making routes and using the mouse, as I do, with enthusiasm, spinning my track ball around as camera view, choosing content, making tracks etc. But with Windows 8, your mouse pointer becomes like your finger on a tablet I pad-type thingey, bringing things into the screen from the top and bottom ,and in from both sides at will. Depending on where the mouse pointer left the screen, Windows can default to the start menu or the desktop. The Trainz program IS STILL open...... and still at the same place in the route building process. It took me a while to figure that out, as well as how to get back there (thanks Windows....). I have the desktop icon which I sometimes use to open Trainz. But I also have the TS2010. exe (the open me) file, as a 2nd shortcut in the Windows taskbar (for me the line of icons at the bottom of my screen, NOT set to auto hide). I had the icon/shortcuts "pinned to the taskbar" from the fancy new start menu - the first thing to open in Windows 8. (I always go to the desktop from there, which is where I go, from there, to everywhere as I HATE the new start menu screen). The point is, the taskbar icon, when I found myself out of my route building and back at the desktop/start menu, had a box around it in the taskbar. When I clicked once on the con, I was right back in my route building like I had never left. This happens to me a lot. it's annoying but doesn't stop me for long. If you or your son have this happen, without a Windows 'crash' type box, this might be what has happened. And thanks to the folks who have been trying to help you in this thread. I'm quite new at this and these kinds of answers, really teach me a lot. Good luck Delticfab. Rebecca

Thanks Rebecca! I'm going to print your message out - and read it leisurely tonight over a glass of wine!
But, it's nice to hear that I'm not the only person trying to run Trainz sims on windows 8!!!

Finally, yes, I think I have now got myself back to where I would have liked to have found myself about 30 hours ago.
Phew!!!!

Although, it's time to hand over to my son, and see what happens when he tries to run the programme. Fingers well and truly crossed.

Many thanks to all who have helped. And thanks for sticking with me whilst I go slowly, yet surely, mad.
I will need to pop along in the near future to your very helpful website Shane, as I will not be repeating the error of my ways.
If I have a working set up, there's every reason to create a backup!!!
Thanks, jo

How to know that Trainz is still running or not

Hi Rebecca, Jo:

There is an easy way to know that Trainz is still running even if you don't think so. When you start Trainz go to the "Options" tab (2nd from top left) and open. Then go to the "Developer" tab on the right and check " Show Database Process Windows" and click "OK".

This will now show 'TaDDaemon.exe" in a DOS window (remember those?) which can save you much grief. When you exit Trainz that window remains open UNTIL Trainz actually shuts down. I have Trainz pinned to the Task bar so after the Trainz icon disappears you will continue to see the Taddaemon window until it exits. Then Trainz is actually closed. There have been other threads where people have had to do extended database repairs because they powered-off before the Taddeamon.exe finished it's shutdown. BTW it will also show the Trainzutil.exe sessions when you are adding new content to your database (from downloads etc.)

Hope this save's you some future problems. :D

Cheers,

Derek
