Windows 10 - A few questions

Smileyman

Socialist Serenade
The obvious question is how compatible is it with TS12?
I've seen a lot of people mention using it with T:ANE, but I can't remember how many I've seen with TS12.

While we're here, what's the compatibility like concerning general Windows software, like Photoshop, 3ds Max, etc?
Pretty much everyday programs.

Also, does it do an "Upgrade Install" over your copy of Win7 or Win8, or do you have to do a complete install?

And finally, and most importantly, what happens when you want to reinstall it?
From time to time, I like to back everything up, and reinstall my Windows installation.
It's usually between 12-18 months, or sometimes less if something gets corrupted and nothing seems to fix it.
Just wondering if we can order a DVD version once installed, or if we have to BUY a version (or subscribe, as that's likely to be the business model) if we want to reinstall after the free downloaded version.

75% off-topic, but important questions I think, considering most people are going to be offered it any time now.

Thanks,
Brian.

Hi Brian
From what I have read about Windows 10 it seems that "if it works in 7 with service packs and if it works in 8.1" it will be fully compatible with 10".
Most people who know reckon it is a must to go with 10.
I think it is a full program not an update - available for download after July 29 - free for 12 months and then buy or re-install your previous system.
You can opt out and re-install your previous system at any time.
I would think to re-install 10 should be possible - if not a giant step backwards.

Hope this helps - Ron

SORRY FOR DOUBLE POST !!

Hi Brian
From my searches on this subject "if it works in Windows 7 with Service Pack and with 8.1" it is compatible with Windows 10.
Available from July 29 it will be a download - free for 12 months - if you wish to opt out at any time you can re-install your previous system.
If you wish to keep 10 after the twelve free months there will be a charge (Aus$119).
I think with your Code Number it should be possible in the future to re-install.

Hope this helps - Ron

That may not be correct:-
Here is the official line: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade within a year of its release.
Furthermore Microsoft states “once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge.”

There have been a few threads where the posters have claimed that TS12 actually runs better on Windows 10 than it does on Windows 7. So far I have not seen any posts contradicting this.

On the matter of the Win 10 upgrade, my understanding is that if you upgrade in the first 12 months from July 29 then the upgrade is free with no later or hidden charges. If you upgrade after that then you will have to purchase the upgrade.

Do you really think Microsoft will supply a complete new Windows 10 for "free" ?
I have seen on line that if you wish to keep 10 after the "free 12 months" you can purchase it or revert to your original system.
As the only 10 version has been -pre-release - which I have used - it is hardly possible for anyone to say any Trainz version is better or not until the final release.
I think the reference to "no later or hidden charges" is after the purchase of Windows 10.

Time will tell - Ron

What's so difficult to understand or believe? Microsoft has gone on record saying it's a free upgrade (for eligible users.)

Quotes below, from: Microsoft Clears Up Just Who Gets Free Windows 10

To recap what we’ve known since the Jan. 21 Windows 10 announcement: Microsoft will provide an upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free, for a period of one year from the release of Windows 10.

...
Woodman clarified for me that if you upgrade your PC to Windows 10 with the free offer, you won’t be socked with a payment demand after some arbitrary period. Windows 10 isn’t “freemium.” It won’t convert from a free upgrade to a paid or subscription-supported operating system. He told me, clearly, “Once you’re on Windows 10, you’re on Windows 10, and there will be no additional charge.”

(Emphasis added)

There has been a lot of discussion on this point in the news media with divided opinions. The CEO of Microsoft has been quoted as saying that the future of Windows may be as an "open source OS" which has some interesting possibilities. It is well known Microsoft makes far more money from its applications software (Word, Excel, etc) than it does from selling Windows so going this route would cut costs (and responsibilities).

One source I looked at speculated that Microsoft could move to the pay-for-support model for Windows that is used by many of the OSs that some people are touting as an alternative to Windows 10. Certainly that would be a sensible move in the world of corporate IT.

Another source speculated that the wording in the Microsoft offer could be taken to mean that Windows 10 will be "free until it is not free", a tactic that is, apparently, used by Apple for its "upgrades".

At the moment we seem to have a lot of heat and speculation. Personally, I am taking Microsofts offer at face value and have already registered for the upgrade on my laptop and will do so on my new desktop when it arrives in the next few days. After that, we will see.

I am a witness, Brian!

I'm running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Exvaluation copy Build 10162. I've been with the Insider Program since the early builds last year. The operating system does a good job with compatibility. Everything I have thrown at it runs except for one utility and that's due to some changes to the debugging code. Other than that, all my programs including all of PEVs Tools, AssetX, my other tools, utilities, and both TS12 and T:ANE run very well, in fact much better than they did under either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. The overall system performance is better in lots of ways; the system doesn't act heavy like it does in Windows 7 and not clumsy to use like in Windows 8.1

I recently had some BSOD crashes, however, that was related to an NVidia graphics driver and since they updated their driver to the current one, that issue has gone away and I haven't had any since.

Ive been running Win 10 side by side with Win 7 for several months now. Ive yet to find a program that runs in Win 7 that will not run in win 10. Ive tested the following:
Tane
TS12
TS 09
Open office
Blender
gimp
3d Max 2012
Minecraft
steam
unity
notepad++
plus many others without problem

I do know that for a fact once Windows 10 comes out, I will upgrade my Windows 8.1 PC to Windows 10, and possibly my Windows 7 PC. I currently have plans on upgrading my old Windows XP to Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 soon. My Windows Vista laptop, however, will not get upgraded at all.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Very useful information, which I'm sure others will be glad to find here over the next couple of months.

Great to hear about performance with TS12, and most things in general.
It's what I'd heard, but wanted to make sure.

Also very happy to hear about the compatibility.
Upgrading to a new version of Windows is generally a nightmare for getting everything working again, so it sounds like they've learnt their lesson (if they're not careful, they're going to get a good reputation! ;))

So, it sounds like it's a full version download, rather than a upgrade patch?
This is the important one for me.
If it's a full installation that you can download and burn onto a DVD, then that should mean that it can be re-installed, using the same key(s) that are given when you take them up on the offer of upgrading to 10.
I guess we won't know for sure until it's released and available, but as far as the betas go, how did they install?
Did they simply upgrade to 10, leaving everything you had installed ready to use, or was it a full installation?

I'm going to do a little Googling on this one now, to see what I can find.

As for the price, my understanding from the moment they announced it months ago was that it was free if you upgraded within the 12 months, and if you upgrade after that 12 month period, you have to pay.
No further charges after that, regardless of whether you've upgraded in that 12 month period, or bought it after it.
At least for the life of the product.
Word on the street is that Microsoft, like Apple and others, are moving over to a subscription-based business model, so I would expect that Windows 11 will be subscription per year to use, hence giving everyone Windows 10 for free, and getting them to move over to it quickly with the offer.

Right, Google time.
Thanks again gents!

Brian.

Well, that didn't take long to find. :)
Straight from the horse's mouth:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...893-b9d1-6cfac0d6290a?tm=1434646337185&auth=1

Apparently, once you've upgraded (and it is an upgrade initially) and it's been authenticated, you can download a full installation file, for storing onto DVD or USB Drive, to allow a completely clean install.

Also, if you don't want to do a completely clean install, but you want to "refresh" Windows 10, in case of errors or corruption, you can do that built-in, without it affecting your installed programs, or requiring it to download new updates and patches again.
Very nice.

There's some concern about how much hardware you can change before you need to buy a new copy to install it, as it becomes classed as a new machine, but aside from that, I'm liking what I'm hearing.

No doubt, it's all too good to be true, and somewhere in there, there's a button that, once clicked, will give Microsoft ownership of our Soul.
So be careful! ;)

Thanks again.
I'm quite looking forward to it.
And I've got the best part of a month to make sure I've got my Backup DVDs up to date.

I did read somewhere, in a magazine reviewing Windows 10, that Microsoft will drop Windows Media Centre from Win10. I use the PC as the TV too, with a tuner card, and WMC is a very useful program for that purpose. I have quite a few films and dramas recorded in WMC format................

They introduced WMC in Windows XP Media Center edition, and then started dropping it in 8 and 8.1, and now are scrapping it. It's a very handy program. At least they are replacing IE though. IE never had a better version then IE 6. Sigh, the early days of XP.

Smileyman. Ive currnetly got Win 10 and Win 7 running side by side. I did a full install initially into a separate partition and have just done upgrade since then. Oh and just to add an aside. Im running the same version of Tane from the same directory for both versions. So I can run the game in either. Any changes I make in 7 will show up in 10 and visa-versa as both 7 & 10 are accessing the same files.

Medic Center, though useful, is going away in part due to 3rd party licensing with MP4 playback. There are other solutions to Media Center including VLC and other 3rd party solutions from what I read.
