Win 8, T12: the positive thread

By the way, I notice that when you disagree with someone both on this forum and the other one you are on all the time, many times you resort to insulting the person you disagree with, by calling them derogatory names. Is this something you do in person, or only when you are hiding behind a computer monitor?
If you were in front of me I would be more insulting!! Forums require some decorum!!!

I find hearsay accounts of Win8 totally useless in the discussion, if you ain't used Win8 what do you know about Win8.

It takes about two minutes to adjust to the change in interface.

People refuse to change, there is an app to put the XP interface into Win7 because people are too fearful of change.

I plan on using Win7 for as long as I can. I'm not into tablets or other mobile devices, I don't own a smartphone, my home pc and "dumbphone " meet my needs. I've got better things to spend my money one than some new electronic gadget every year. I don't game much besides Trainz so I don't care about Xbox or Playstation. That being said, technology is like riding the bus, it requires change. However, I'm not a believer in change for the sake of change. If something is working for me, I don't need the latest and greatest replacement. I generally use things until they wear out or my needs change.

I came to PC's late in life as far as having one at home, my first OS was Windows ME. It worked fine for me, did all I needed, despite the rantings and ravings over how awful it was. That machine lasted 5 years before it gave up, so my next machine came with XP. XP was great, that lasted 6 years. That machine died and I had my current machine built with Win 7. (I'll leave out a brief period in between where I was using my wife's spare laptop with Vista, ugh). Like I said as long as Win 7 works for me, I see no need in replacing it.

I get a kick out of all these geek fights, people get so wrapped up in their personal choices and seem to get really riled up if someone says something to the contray. Very entertaining.

I think the thread was started to belay the fears of people buying a new computer with Win8 for Trainz.

There are those of us who have used Win8 because it came on a new computer. No one has said anyone should switch.

As the OP said:

Hi Everyone:

Every so often someone asks if Trainz 12 works with Windows 8 and suddenly it stirs up a "hornets" nest!

I am starting this thread to simply tell the truth. T12 works perfectly in Windows 8. I sincerely hope that the negative comments do not start here. We have seen the negative comments against Windows 8 time and again. You know who you are. So please lets keep this positive.

That sure came true.

True, but it also has been intimated that people who don't care to switch are fearful of change or other various character flaws. If you use it and it works, great. If you don't want to use it that's OK too. I doo agree however that out of hand criticism based upon hearsay and rumor isn't productive, much like all the "I haven't installed SP1 because I heard it sucks" postings.

Wow, down the rabbit hole

Indeed I started this thread as a service to fellow Trainzers who ask an innocent question: does Trainz work on Windows 8? Yes it does. That is what happened to me last November when I upgraded to a new computer and it had Windows 8 installed. Some kind Trainzers provided me with a couple of hints and I have enjoyed Windows 8 and Trainz since then. I was simply hoping that we could share our experience for those people who are upgrading their computers. I "innocently" thought that the title would keep it positive.

This post went down the "rabbit hole" very quickly with all the "negativity" and I get the feeling that some of the naysayers have never even tried Windows 8! If you follow my instructions in my first post you will find NO DIFFERENCE FROM WINDOWS 7. Every program that I have installed works perfectly. Case closed. :D

Now back to the fighting..............

PS: I have edited my first post, see edit at the bottom.

That'll teach you to try to be helpful.

We have an old saying here in Jersey: "The road to Hoboken is paved with good intentions"

Since you are editing your first post could you please take out the comment "If you are getting a new PC it will have Windows 8 installed." This is not necessarily true.

I don't dispute that Trainz works with Win 8 but that doesn't mean to say that Win 7 doesn't work either.

True. I had this PC built for me and the builder gave me a choice of any OS I wanted. However I imagine off the shelf mass market machines will be more geared to Win 8. Isn't it general thought that with Windows the odd versions are good and the evens stink?

*it's the opposite with Star Trek movies, btw.

With my new computer I went with Win8 because my brother recommended Win8 as a USER.

Glad I did!

I had Win7 64 on the old one.

Well I got a new computer with Win8 installed less than two weeks ago (12 days actually). I had never seen Win8 except on TV but I found it understandable after a bit of futzing about. Irritating but understandable.

After awhile switching to the Desktop interface all the time I eventually adapted. The Metro interface isn't as horrible as I originally thought although it is full of stuff I don't need and don't want. (why would I care about what's trending on Bing for gods sake?)

As for TS12, I got a budget "gamers PC" and although it might equal or even better the performance of my old XP computer (ageing custom built cutting edge gaming computer) in 49922 it did not substantially improve the performance of TS12 SP1 et al. I have ideas on how to upgrade the system to handle TS12 SP1. so my recommendation is to buy a pretty beefy new PC or have a pretty beefy PC if you are planning to run TS12 SP1. I don't think it is Win8 that is leading to my performance issues.

(I'm an old geezer so trust me)

I'm glad you to see you did your research. Some of us never had a brother to ask, I must speak to my parents about the matter.

Dell or HP and many other vendors will supply Win 7 on request. I'm not saying that win 8 is a bad choice on a new machine, I'm just taking the issue that "If you are getting a new PC it will have Windows 8 installed." and there is no choice.

I don't think there was much choice half a year ago. Either a new model, then Win8, or an older model with Win7. As people didn't buy either, vendors changed their policy. The same happened with Vista. Consumers didn't buy, vendors offered XP.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

An image says it all.

Hi John:

As a fellow Canadian and almost a neighbor I have changed the line that you find offensive in my initial post to "probably have Windows 8 installed." You are correct that some vendors may agree to install Windows 7. I bought my new PC at Best Buy in November 2012 and I did not have that option.

And now something that I should have done a long time ago. Below is a screenshot from my WINDOWS 8 DESKTOP. You will notice that it is identical to Windows 7. I have two versions of T12 ready to run. Above is my browser that has all the familiar things such as the "X" to close and "-" to minimize. The most important thing to note is the circular Windows icon on the very left side of the Task Bar at the bottom. That opens the Start Menu that I downloaded from Classic 8. It is IDENTICAL to Windows 7 and EVERYTHING WORKS. So if the "negative guys" want to keep complaining about Win8 go ahead. But I hope that this image proves that Window 8 provides the familiar Desktop with the simple install of that one FREE software.

I have also added this image to my initial post to help fellow Trainzers know that they can go ahead with Win 8 installed on a new PC and keep the familiar Desktop environment.

I hope that this lets us all get back to enjoying Trainz regardless of the version of Windows. :Y:

I

Ta,

offensive is too strong a word, in need of correction perhaps?

I think we are both in agreement that Trainz works on both win 7 and 8.

I remember when Windows 7 came as the built-in on new computers there was a big whine about why wasn't XP an option.

My understanding of the win 8 license agreement is you can down grade the license to run XP if you so desire. This is sometimes used in the corporate world I recall we had a couple of remote servers with very old software on them, documentation was none existent and they were used for production work. When I say remote the air fare was more than the cost of a server. The new rewrite was abandoned three times and we kept the old servers running as long as we could but eventually we could no longer get replacement parts so we crossed our fingers and purchased new Dell servers and set them up with DOS. It worked quite nicely. The DOS world was a lot tricker as the software accessed the hardware directly so changing the hardware often meant the software would no longer run.

Since Windows 7 works just as good as XP, if not better (64 bit versions allow use of more RAM) because of newer devices, why would you even bother with "downgrading"? That is crock, a no brainer. Windows 8 is the same as Windows 7, as far as what programs will run on both. And, yes, there is a desktop for Windows 8, so stop sniveling about the tiles. For god's sake, click on the desktop tile, press the Windows key, something to get you there. Geez, cry babies.

The following OEM versions of Windows software are eligible for downgrade

I agree with above post. Windows 8 desktop works the way 7 does. Stop complaining about NOTHING.
I'm afraid you are missing the strategic point. MS and its CEO tell us they are going to retire the classic desktop. It's legacy mode for them already. And with this they are abandoning the classic way of creating and using application software. Analysts say it's similar to the migration from the text based command shell to a graphical user interface 25 or 30 years ago. The big difference today, however, is that this time it is not about progress under ergonomic aspects, not about ease of use.
