Will trains work in an OS other than Windows?

Well so far I am pretty happy with Ubuntu. Unfortunately, the install of TS2010 had a glitch. When they asked for the second DVD it didn't recognize it. I think what I will have to do is copy the files from both DVDs into one file on Ubuntu. Then install it from that one location. That way it won't have to search for the second DVD.

Steam installed fine and Railworks 2 is downloading now. Tomorrow I may install the 64-bit version of Ubuntu on my dual processor comp. Ubuntu recognizes RAM above the Windows 4 GIG limit. My problem with the bad/overheating Nvidia driver should be resolved too.

The thing that unifies us is a love of Trains though, and that's what to concentrate on.

Hey Dep, you know there is a 64bit version of Windows 7, which will recognize more than 4GB of RAM. I've got it running on my work Dell laptop, all good so far.

Yep...but you have to BUY it. :)

Ubuntu is free and always has been free. I have Windows XP Pro 64-bit on my dual processaor comp now. It has the over 4 GIG benefit too. But it came loaded with the comp when I bought it.

this has been an endless question under linux

I'm tired of the endless and expensive updates of Windows every few years. I have tested out an OS called Ubuntu that is based on Linux and it is pretty neat. So my question is: would TS12 work on a system other than Windows?

yes trainz 12 will run under ubuntu 11.04 10.10 and 10.04.yes you can install video drivers from both ati and nvidia with no problems, the deal is ubuntu doesnt have even full dx9 support, you can use crossover games, cedega and wine,i have had trainz 12 working with crossover games with my best success , it takes forever to load but once it loads its about 70% playable and yes patches do work as well, i have been messing with linux for along time trying to get windows games to run, if there was full support for windows games, windows of any version would be in the trash and linux would be my os of choice. you do have to have patience and tinker with it to get it to run though good luck

Yep...it does require a bit of tinkering. But I think it's worth the effort. I use PlayonLinux as a front end to use Wine. If a game isn't listed on their list (TS10 and 12 aren't but 2004 and 2006 are) you can install the game manually and it's quite easy. It does take a LONG time to load though. And I had the glitch of not being able to access the second DVD when it asked for it. But I can do a workaround that.

I have 3 desktops and one laptop. One desktop is pretty old and obsolete, but it makes for a nice testbed. Another is a dual Xeon processor, and another is a single Pentium 4 3.8GIG proceessor. The laptop is a Centrino dual but the only game I use on that is Railworks 2. I will probably put Ubuntu on the three desktops. What I REALLY like is this:

A 1 gigahertz processor, 512 megabytes of random access memory, or RAM, and 5 gigabytes of hard disk space are the recommended system requirements for both Ubuntu 32 bit and 64 bit.

Compare that with the latest versions of Windows:
  1. 1GHz (2 gig for 64bit)
  2. 1GB of RAM
  3. 16GB of disk space (or 20GB for 64-bit users)
  4. Direct X 9 graphics with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  5. Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require advanced or additional hardware.
And we all know that is BS. Those are the MINIMUM system requirements just to be able to install Windows 7. If you plan on running Trainz or most any other game, you are gonna need at least 4GIG of RAM and dual core processors. Ubuntu uses much less system resources than Windows. So your processor and RAM can be used for games to a much greater extent than Windows.

Well here's the update on Ubuntu and the train sims. Railworks seems to be a no-go. Steam is iffy at best and crashes 3 out of 4 times when starting. I was able to download Railworks, but every time I try and run it it crashes and takes Steam down with it.

Trainz 2010 is slightly better. The good news is I was able to install it and right now it is checking for missing assets. However, I was NOT able to patch it. The in-game patcher didn't work, of course. It didin't work for me in Windoze either, so that was no surprise. I had the patch on a CD so I copied it to the desktop. I had to go into it's properties and click on the little box making it okay to use as a executeable. But when I click on it to run, I get an hourglass for about 20 seconds and then nothing. Sheesh...lots of quirky things in this OS :( I think if I put it on the other comps I will do it as a dual-boot setup to make sure all this stuff works before dumping Windoze.

Well I am in Ubuntu right now as I post in this thread. Changeover was fast and easy. I panicked a bit at first because the mouse stopped working and I had to use Tab to move around. But after it installed all the hardware, the mouse worked fine. This comp is so old I had to install a card in the motherboard to use USB 2.0. So Ubuntu had to recognize it before it started working. Internat connection was VERY easy as it picked up my wireless terminal on it's own. All I had to do was sign in the password.
Nvidia driver was a snap to download and install too. Audio driver installed automatically.
Web browser is Firefox. Next step is to try and install TS2010 and see if it will work. It may not install because the specs on this comp may not be adequate. I'll report back.:)

You may have problems running TS2010 under WINE because of the TAD Daemon. TS2009 patched to SP3 runs out of the box on my rig with Ubuntu. I have to admit though, it does not run as smooth as it does on Windows 7 64bit.

Geoff: I finally gave up on Ubuntu. Even Trainz wouldn't run in it, although I did get it installed completely. I re-installed Winblows XP Pro 32 bit. Everything works in it. Cripes. 120 updates installed in it!! Most were security updates. On a brighter note...if you can call it brighter...I found out that my main comp has a bad motherboard. At first I thought it was the Nvidia drivers. It shuts off the video display after about 3-5 minutes. Plus there is no communication with the keyboard. I took the side cover off to see if all the fans were working. They were. I vacuumed out the inside, but it still malfunctions. Ah well....it's always something. It is nice to have 3 comps to pick from. Hey..I have a hardware question...my slow-obsolete computer (Pentium 4 2 GIG, AGP video card) is an ATX form factor. Can I upgrade it with a new motherboard and other goodies or will I have to buy a new one?
