hi all,

i have trainz for my ipad 2 and love it, and now i have been contemplating purchasing trainz 12 for my computer. from browsing the forum here it seems that a majority of you are suggesting against running it on a laptop but i just purchased this one not to long ago. my machine is a hp pavillion dv7 and is equipped as follows:
  • intel i5-2430M Processor
  • 8 GB Ram
  • Raedon 6490M Graphics
  • 1.5 TB Hard Drive
Thanks For Any Suggestions/info,

Regards,
Jordan

I run 12 on a lesser laptop than yours. I can't run all sliders maxed, and Frame Rates are often less than I'd like, but it does run.

I was toying with buying the HP DV7 as I believe it had 1Gb Dedicated Graphics ?

The Video Card is most important on a gaming laptop ... the other is the CPU processor speed being fast, (I am lead to believe like 2.8Ghz - 3.2 Ghz, or more) ?

Trainz only uses 2Gb RAM ... so a laptop that has 8Gb RAM, with Integrated Graphics, or a 512Mb video card would be questionable.

thanks for the replies,

mine has the 1gb dedicated graphics and i beleive the frame rate is 60 (found it while looking through the specs)

You should verify whether the video is discrete i.e. not using shared memory with the rest of the system. I believe the dv7 series all offer discrete, non-shared memory for video in all but the base models so you should be ok, but you'll have to double-check with the manufacturer to be absolutely sure. Keep in mind, though, that laptop parts are greatly inferior to desktop in terms of performance; your CPU ranks below a 3GHz Pentium 4, which is an 8-year-old CPU. So, don't expect a lot from a portable device.

That said, my ancient desktop runs Trainz pretty well.

Edit: Ah, I see you posted it does have dedicated graphics. Good, that will help a lot.

thanks for the reply, will it lag at all? i dont want to have it lag or be slow. another question can the extra downlable content be stored on an external hard drive and still be used succesfully?

thanks,
jordan

I am running TS 12 on an Alienware M17 with the folowing specs:

CPU- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz
RAM- 2GB
Windows Vista 64-but OS
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 (X2) In Xfire mode

My Sim runs just fine. No slow downs or lags here.

It doesn't matter where you put it, once it's installed, it's in the game folder, though the original files will stay wherever to put them originally. That said, since Trainz lacks any DRM, you can pretty much back it up or run it from anywhere, even off, for example, a thumbdrive. That applies to DLC content or downloads off the Black Pages of the DLS.

You're welcome. FYI, I believe this is the first time someone has created a "Can my laptop run Trainz?" thread and I haven't said, "if you have to ask, no."

Or, just plain "no." lol Happy Trainzing! :)

The only comment I will make is to clear up any possible confusion regarding downloadable content.

All content in Trainz must be kept in the same place as the program itself - this means that the game and the game's content have to be kept together.

If you do run into any technical issues when running Trainz, I may be able to help.

Shane

EDIT: This only applies to content that has been added into the game. The original .cdp files can be stored elsewhere.
