Hi everyone,
I'm trying to recreate a real life route in the Alps that runs along a valley floor between high mountains. The valley floor varies in width from several thousand metres down to less than a hundred in some places. I've used TransDEM to create the terrain accurately and I want to make best use of the 5000 metre draw distance to obtain good views of the mountains.
I'm now looking for the best way to use textures and scenery for the huge areas of mountainside that are always in view when driving along the valley floor. I've tried using textures to define forests and rocky areas on mountain sides but the textured areas, when viewed from more than 2000 metres away, turn into large unrealistic square shapes. I've tried covering the mountain sides with large areas of simple trees and rock features but soon got to a situation where Trainz hangs indefinitely, perhaps due to too much scenery in view at any time. (I have a fairly powerful quad core PC with 4GB of RAM.)
Is there a way to adjust the distance at which textured areas maintain their outline shape? It seems a bit strange that we can have mountains and scenery objects such as trees and buildings that look good up to 5000 metres away but not the textures on mountain sides.
Is there a way to know when I've got too much scenery placed in an area of the route?
Any hints or tips would be much appreciated,
Richard
