Why are tracks so......

Times when you would not want chunky mesh.
1 - Track with no ballast. After seeing one, I'm not even sure better texture work would could make it happen. The sleepers clearly look like flat paper hovering over the ground.
2 - Dual gauge track. Not supported with how chunky track is made.
3 - Maybe rails with no ballast and sleepers too. Unless you modify the ground or track height, they would float above the surface a bit.

Don't know how the track works in terms of polys, I just know it gives the best FPS.

The least you can get away with is 2 poly (flat plane)

The other 4 poly are used in 2 planes to represent the rails, tilted slightly so look OK in driver or overhead.
 
Wow...wouldn't want to look at that too close, although I suppose it might work as part of an MRT track, the far away part.
