Which version of Trainz to obtain

Just wondering which version I should be getting... last time I bought a copy was the TRS2004 deluxe edition.
I want to get back into it lol.
Should I go for the 2010 version or version 12?
Do you know if the previous content is compatiable with the newer versions?

Thanks

Tom

You can play 04, 06 on 09, 10, 12, but you can not play 12, 10, 09 on 06, 04

Versions are not forward compatable.

Alot of 04, 06 assets do not show up in 12.

10 is tried and tested and has backward compatabilty mode for 06, 04.

So the choice should be between 10 & 12

If you have a very low end PC 12 will run poorly, unless you add a good video card, and has a fast CPU.

Lower end PC's with Integrated Graphics will not run 09, 10, 12 well at all ... but does run 04, 06 fairly well ... but choppy framerates.

04, 06 will need a paid FCT to download assests, and both versions still work well ... but 09, 10, 12 have better video graphics, and alot of other improvements.

Thanks for the reply.

Well my system at the moment has an AMD Athlon II X2 250 CPU 3GHz with 2GB RAM, 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate, ATI Radon HD 4200 display adapter, DirectX 10.
The Gaming graphics score by Windows Experience Index is 5.2, CPU 6.5, memory 5.5, Graphics 4.1 and hard disk 5.9.

The graphics is probably your bottleneck.
Back to your question though, I support 12, but fear it may be a shock to new users. 2010 is more versatile in regards to using older content.

Thanks. Yeah I would like to be able to access and use a range of content.

I use 12 exclusively now and old assets are slowly being upgraded to work properly in 12. Also 12 is where all the development is taking place at this time. I have over 34,000 assets that work well in my 12 version which should be enough to do what most thing i need to do.

12 runs better than 10 does on my machine.

Did you read the guys specs.

I will always recommend TS2010 over TS12. Even if you have the specs to run 12.

His CPU specs beat mine 5.4 to his 6.5.
His Memory is slightly slower.
His graphics is his slow spot. mine 5.5 to his 4.1

So if he bought an inexpensive graphics card from now his machine would be better than mine. I stand by my reccomendation.

mirage82,

What operating system do you have? In any case I sugest 4 meg of Ram and a better video card.
It is my understanding that TS12 and the latest patch for TS2010 do NOT have a compatability mode but do have multiplayer.

IMHO, I would get ts10 if you are desperate for older content but only patch it up to build 44088 (I think thats the second patch but I could be wrong) and no further or you will loose compatibility mode, but I find TS12 quit sufficient, and as more old content gets repaired, the better it gets, but some old content may not survive the cut, but all the new stuff well makes up for it.

Hi all, so its almost a year since I posted my question and I never did do anything about upgrading, lol.
I just got an email offer for simulator central 75% of regular price for TS12, so I may as well buy a copy seeing that its around $10.
I'm also looking at getting the TS2010 Engineers edition Boxed Edition version.
Has much of the older content been upgraded so it will be compatible on the newer versions?
I'm interested in the Australian content, is there much of this available for the newer versions?
Can I have two versions of TS installed on the one computer?
Thanks and look forward to your replies.

Yes you can have every version you want installedon the same computer. You can also have several copies of the same version installed as well.

Despite the nay-sayers, TS12 is much better than any previous versions.

It will only be any good to me if I have access to the Australian content:)
