Where to Find Plans

C/LTJG - Operations
Some of you know that I attempted last year to start making content. And therefore you know that I had to stop due to school. Well long story short I'm thinking of coming back. However, being a person who wishes to make moderate to high quality work i would like to know where to get plans for steam era freight cars.

Any constructive result is appreciated.

One day people who respond to this kind of post will direct you to the largest listing of plans ever created especially for Trainz users, rather than a single source that may or may not have what you want. Until then, I'll just go on beating my own drum until I'm heard. :) The Trainz Resources Directory has links to thousands of plans under - you guessed it - Plans and Drawings.

@ Johnk - Is there anyway of finding out what scale the're drawn too

I just scour the Internet looking for any resource material that may be useful. Many plans on the sites I've linked to have information about scale, but sites like Fallen Flags etc. may have plans in all different scales. If a scale or useful dimension doesn't exist, I look for common features - the track gauge which we know, wheel diameters etc. I try to avoid plans that have no scale to refer to.

Fallen Flags may also have hundreds of drawings I may have missed. I intend going through the site more carefully, but that will take time.

Good luck.

The best plans are not on the Internet but in books and magazines. I use 30 some years of model magazines and some car and loco cyclopedias witch is what the model magazines used as a souses. You should also know that most plans have errors in them depending on type and maker and how long it has been running. A lot of shops did a lot of modifying.

I have to agree, but the book mentioned in SR6900's post costs about $100 in OZ, a lot to pay for a resource that only covers American freight cars. Many magazines including Model Railroader were a fantastic resource in the 1960's to 1970's each copy contained plans for a loco, a building of some description and at least one piece of rolling stock. I had hundreds of copies but gave them to a guy who I can no longer locate. All these plans are still available at the Model Railroader site for a couple of dollars each, but you have to know exactly what you want. There are no thumbnails available as far as I can tell.

The Trainz Resources Directory only lists stuff that is free. The one exception being web sites that sell Trainz Payware, but these are all clearly notated as such.
