Where do I start?

I love Mac and I love Trainz and since Auran was not going to anytime soon offer a Mac version, I did what I had to do to get what I wanted. I bought an Intel-based Mac, installed Boot Camp, downloaded the demo of Trainz (it is Trainz 2006) to see how it would play. It performed flawlessly. Now I have both Trainz and a Mac to run it on.

My question is where do I start? There are more Trainz packages than there are Carter's little pills. What is the best bang for the buck? I really want to design layouts not just run the engines. Any advice?

I'd say '06, once you've got over CMP (I don't find it any problem, much better than the old system) plus it has LOADS of built in content. Perfect.

Trainz The Complete Collections

On Amazon.com they list a package called "Trainz The Complete Collections" which claims to include Trainz 2004 and Trainz 2006 as well as some Trainz Routes, but the price seems too low. Is that because they just released Trainz 2009.

I don't Have a Macintosh, but Yes. TRS2006 has a LOT of Built in Stuff, and Once you conquer the Content Manager, (Which We will all Help you with - It's not an Uncommon Issue. :p) You can put on all sorts of things...

I like 2006 also, it has CMP, so you can cut your teeth on that while they perfect 2009, and it is pretty stable. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck and enjoyment!:D

Content Manager Issues? Is that related to some of the issues I have heard regarding service pack 1?

I am running XP on my Mac with a 2.44 ghz processor and 4 gigs of memory so I am not anticipating any issues with 2004 or 2006. I am excited. I have played a little with 2006 a few years back and it was incredibly easy to design with.

Thanks so much for the tips.

And whatever edition you purchase , make certain it has not been previously registered ! One strong reason to order directly from Auran .

Just to round it off TRS2009, once you've seen Vinnybarb's scenery trs2009 objects with normal mapping forget the other versions.

Cheerio John

I am a little leery of TRS2009. I want a good experience so I think I will go with one of the earlier versions until I get more familiar with the program. Thanks also for the tip about registration. I know from visits here in the past that downloading content is one of the biggest pluses of this software.

Wow I just noticed that the last time I was on this forum was March of 2007. I think that is just about the time Auran was looking into a Mac version. I will definitely be here much more often once I get Trainz in my greedy little hands and installed on the computer.

Hi Macsteve,

I bought the TRAINZ COLLECTION and it is good. You get UTC, TRS2004, TRS2006 and 4 Trainz Routes for 2006, plus Paint Shed for UTC and 2004. I paid A$39.95 for mine.
I tried 2006 but itgave me trouble so I settled on 2004 and that's where I will stay till 2009 gets to at least SP4.
Cheers,
Mike

I'd personally leave 09 on the shelf a little longer.

TRS04 is a fantastic stable easy-to-use version.

TRS06 is also stable with SP1 and for most users CMP behaves tolerably though there are definitely some problems. The 'Complete Collection' gives both 04 and 06, no reason not to get both.

Don't buy second-hand, if the serial number has been registered it is not transferable so minimal Forum access and no DLS...

Andy :)
