Where did the buffer stops go?

Hi! I'm new to Trainz (2010 EE) and I'm building my first route together with my son.

The other day we added some buffer stops, I believe it was the "UK rail buffer stop (lit)" kind, which was built in.

Today, I can't find any buffer stop whatsoever to add. Thinking I just couldn't remember the name I opened the route and used "get object" on the buffer I had already added, but nothing happened. I can't move it either.

In the Content Manager I can find the stopper, but since it's built in, it doesn't allow me to download it.

I think this is very strange. What I have done since it was working is to upgrade from build 42203 to 43434, and applying a few content upgrades from within the game. Can any of this have caused the buffers to disappear?

Many thanks in advance,

Holger

To be honest it could be part of that layer thingy in 2010
It has a tendency to hide things pendin how you save etc....
I would look deeper in posts here on how to work with layers........
Its a bit confusing to explain exactly what happens but it does confuse a lot of us at first bite........
good luck.......

Thanks for the hints and the link. I will certainly read up on using layers and sessions.

However in this case, I can't find the buffers at all in the object picker, even when clearing the filter. So I can't create any new buffers. Could this really be related to a layers issue?

Cheers,
Holger

Not being able to find an object in the Surveyor object tool (i.e. it doesn't even show up in the little display window) is usually caused by a "favourites" selection setting.

You can set Surveyor so that it only displays your favourite items. This can be turned ON by default which is probably why you can no longer see the buffer.

When you are in Surveyor ..
  1. Click the Main Menu
  2. Click Options
  3. In the dialogue window select Surveyor Settings from the options on the left
  4. Scroll down the panel on the right to the last item "Only display favourite content:
  5. If it is ON then click it OFF.
Not being able to move an object that you have selected on the screen is usually a layer issue - for example: the object is in a layer that is locked. Unlocking the layer will allow it to be moved.

I have verified the "Only display favourite content" setting - it was indeed enabled, so I disabled it. I have also performed an extended database repair from the Content Manager, which found and corrected 8 errors.

Unfortunately, though, I still can't find the buffer in the object selector. I'm positive that I'm not using any filter (including the default 5 star only filter which seems to appear from time to time).

By the way, the specific objects I'm looking for are the "UK rail buffer stop" and "UK rail buffer stop (lit)". However, searching for "buf" brings up only a few unrelated items and some "scrap buffers". I've also tried searching for UK and browsing the rather long list.

[edit]

Hold on, it just appeared. The filter function seems to behave a bit randomly at the moment, but for now I am actually able to find it, using some strings. "UK" itself didn't work, neither did "rail", but "UK rail" works. Anyway, hopefully the issue is now solved.

Many thanks for all the helpful advice!

Cheers,
Holger

It will depend on which filter you are using. The filter at the top of each pick list in the surveyor tools will stop working when it finds the first match. The better filter to use is a separate one that is switched on with the CTRL-SHIFT-F keys. This one allows you to build more complex searches and to save your searches but you must remember to click the Clear button to restore the pick lists to normal after a search. Hit the ESC key to remove the filter window from the display.

The fact that you found scrap buffers in your search would suggest that you were inadvertantly looking in the Objects list instead of the Track/Track objects list and that they turned up when you searched in the correct list. It would also be the reason why you could not pick them or move them.

All problems solved

Dnevans8, That's quite true. It turned out that I was confused whether the buffer stops were ordinary objects or track objects, and I believe the whole "I cannot move it" problem was due to that fact. I told you I was a beginner :D

Anyway that misunderstanding is now sorted and the filter works as expected. So all is very fine at the moment. Many thanks for all your replies!

Best regards,
Holger
