Where are all the train simulators ?

"and by the way, ''Open Rails'' is a MSTS clone."

I don't think that this is exactly true. They say that they use the MSTS platform but are trying to develop something much better. Only time will tell of course. Probably worth keeping an eye on.

I remember tying EU07 a few years back. That Spanish one could be very good though reading the forum entry guy seems to be finding difficulty making time. There's been plenty of vapourware sims in the past, who remembers that guy who was supposedly building his own sim based on the Glasgow suburban network, or of course "Black Five" and that South African "Spor-sim" (last one showed great promise).

Now, who's taking bets on how much longer a thread about other sims remains in the General section before being syphoned off to proto talk or community...

Amazed it's lasted this long!

I used to remember Transport Tycoon by Chris Sawyer, this was a brilliant game, a bit outdated now and probably won't work on most newer systems, but I do know there was a follow up called Transport Giant...

Didn't CS also create one called Locomotion? It's a fun game sort of like RR Tycoon, but you can do trains, buses, trucking lines, ships and planes, all serving small to huge cities.

One very good simulation that was in proress was SPOORSIM.

It is South African and is based around a Garrett locomotive.

SPOORSIM V2 has been available for free download for some time but the developer seems to have abandoned it.

from what year is that simulator , michael

I am not sure how long V2 has been around .. maybe 5 years??
Still very good .. similar quality to MSTS and early TRAINZ .. maybe better.

However you are limited to the built in locos and the one layout.

Taking another look I see there is an early diesel as well.

TTD is still with us!

@Joe (airtime) I am pleased to say that, over the last few years, Transport Tycoon has seen 2 revivals by 2 different teams, both of which are succeeding very well. The best, in my eyes, is OpenTTD. This is an open source clone of the original TTD (Transport Tycoon Deluxe) and has lots of new features, graphics and sounds. Plus, there is now a special feature that, if connected to the internet, you can download tons of extra content, from stock packs, to hover buses, to maps, replacements for built in stuff... The list is endless. If you click the online button you will see hundreds of servers, almost all of which are still alive with people in playing. TTDPatch (the other one) is what I played years ago before OpenTTD came about.
You can download both TTD (requierd for OpenTTD) and OpenTTD for free.

Download page for TTD (it includes TTDPatch. You can still use Open TTD with this.)

Website for OpenTTD. Best version is the testing version, OpenTTD 1.00.00 BETA 4.
I am one of thousands of OpenTTD players. Never know, you might find my company breathing down your neck online sometime. ;)
