G'Day Andre, it is open source (free) it is still under development (in alpha stage) I notice the download has been withdrawn from the web site but I think they are possibly getting ready for a second alpha release or possibly a beta. If you want to check it out just google "Open Rails".
Regards
Barrie

I used to remember Transport Tycoon by Chris Sawyer, this was a brilliant game, a bit outdated now and probably won't work on most newer systems, but I do know there was a follow up called Transport Giant...

As mentioned above there is also Railworks, which was made in the UK, the website link is here... http://www.railsimulator.com/ but be warned that for any add-on content, you will have to pay for, also I found the surveyor or editor as they call it, part of the program is very fiddly and can be very frustrating (I recommend a swear box to be set up, before going into Editor, to raise money for your local charity, you should easily make $10 in five minutes).:hehe:.

For me, I save the best till last, and I will gladly recomend Trainz 2010 to anyone, you get tons of well made content for free on the download station made by our superb creators, you get the most friendliest forum family around, and an easy to use surveyor in Trainz 2010, were you can build a route in 5 minutes and not a swear word being heard, (unfortunatly your charity misses out).:'(. For Trainz 2010, The best in the business, visit this link... http://www.ts2010.com/

Hope this helps

The original driver's view train simulator was "Mechanik EN57" devised by two Polish mathematics students. It is still available for download at one or two sites, but can't run in Windows XP without either a DOS / Windows 3.1 emulator being used (I used to run it on Win 98 and I have run it on XP but can't for the life of me remember how!)

The graphics were not brilliant (although good in its day when EGA/VGA was the norm) and you only had the cab view. You couldn't drive backwards.

However, the "solid" feel of old railway stock and the EMU sound (which I am told is pretty faithful to the Polish EN57's) was simply brilliant! People in cyberspace did write their own routes and the two authors devised a "Random Route Generator" program which was always fun for a bit of variety!

I think the whole community, including Microsoft and Auran, learned a lot from Mechanik!

In fact, this "You Tube" tutorial tells you how to mount Mechanik in Win XP

OpenBVE - The current 'in progress' development version. Needs a lot of reading but adds the 'out of the cab' view and very good moving vegetation.

Rule The Rail Excellent if you like running model railways.

It allows you to simulate, almost exactly, the electrical connections and control of all aspects of a model railway. Also, the modelling of scenery and rolling stock is very good. There is a pretty good forum with pointers to many different completed layouts which run automatically and interactively. Try the website and take a look. There are loads of screen shots.

Ah good old Mechanik, my first train simulator. It seemed good at the time. Then I moved on to BVE (better graphics), MSTS (better simulation but awful editing) and finally Trainz (but not until SP3 when I felt the graphics were good enough). How things have changed (and still some people are not satisfied - the rantings of an old man :) )

Abracadata had one out a while back. Actually a lot of fun but I can't remember the name of it at the moment.

Just to clarify first at the OP theres a difference between Railroad Tycoon games and Train simulator games.

Although they are both fun in there own way.

@Joe Transport Tycoon is a fun game but too bad it wont play on most modern systems. The follow up was a game called Chris Sawyers Locomotion. Which was Released in 2004 I believe. Its a very fun game and has lots of mods to enhance the default content in it.

Transport Giant on the other hand is made by Jowood and was a different series with an expansion pack called "Down Under" including Aussie maps and content.

Another old but gold was Train Driver 3. One of the first psuedo cab view sims. Unfortunately the author abandoned it a few years ago but earlier versions can still be found on sites such as Aminet. You'll also need to install and configure an Amiga emulator to get it running, as the author was never able to convert to PC.

Did anyone mention Zusi? That's a payware German orientated sim, rather dated graphics but superb train physics and full timetable operation. A newer version (Zusi 3) with better graphics is supposedly in the works though been in development for nearly 5 years now so believe it when you see it.
