What is this?

Hello all,

I found this broken bit of a plate next to the mainline at Herons Creek. It appears to say NSW on it, but I have no clue as to its background/ original owner. I haven't had any luck finding matches on the Internet either.

I suspect that I might be from the New South Wales Government Railways. Any ideas?

Thank You,

I'd say it was possibly a fragment of railway department china (such as a cup or bowl) - usually they were branded with the crest of the relevant department (although that portion only has the 'NSW' letters remaining, it's feasible that it once spelled 'NSWGR'.

Additionally, it's likely it might have been once part of the crockery carried in the dining car on a passenger train, but how it ended up on the side of a railway track is a mystery. There are collectors of that sort of thing, but I doubt you'd find any buyers for such a tiny fragment, although the NSW Rail Transport Museum might still be interested.

Either way, an interesting find. :)
