What else is left to make?

What about some famous landmarks like The Pyramids, Sphinx, Nelsons Column, The Angel of the North, Eiffel Tower, maybe some of the famous American football/baseball Stadiums, or maybe something for the pet owners such as Aviary or Pigeon lofts for us northerners.

I would like to see more simple dirty, grimy and rundown buildings that back onto most railway lines near near towns and cities.

I have a feeling that some/most of these firms might even welcome the use of their trade marks, after all it is good advertisment for them with a big TRS user base looking at them. And on top of it, they do not even have to pay for spruiking/displaying their brands.

That is what I would point out and reply to, in case I ever would get a "cease using it" demand.

My opinion :)

I once thought of a project and had some items made for it that included a Companies Logo. Once the items where completed I emailed the company and showed them what I had. I told them these where not for commercial use and would be distributed on our DLS. (I had explained a few things about Trainz to them).

They replied that they had no problem with this.

I think in some cases if a company is contacted then there would be a "welcomed" response, as Vinny has basically said here. The free advertising on our Trainz system, even though small in the "big picture" of the world, is still better then nothing and the display of Trainz at Model Railway displays adds to this.

If I remember right, McDonald's sued an Indian restaurant for using a Logo very similar to there big "M" Logo. I am nearly 100% use they last the court case. I have heard of similar cases though where the company has also won such court action.

Much agreed,we need more run down urban looking buildings for trainz,as of now there are only a handful that fit the needs of still livable, but barely. Usually it is in prime condition,or in a condition that is totally dilapidated and can't be lived in,no in between in trainz.

What about a few of the simpler things like a few decent trees for SW USA? A couple of good mesquites, cottonwoods, desert iron wood, palo verde, creosote bushes, and an ocotillo would'nt go astray. Some of these have been done but could stand updating. A few more adobe style buildings would be good maybe a bit more useful to route buiders than Walmarts? Just a couple of suggestions for what its worth.

Some great ideas in there. I might come a-knocking on some of your doors for photo images and dimensions of the objects to be modelled. I've often found they are the hardest thing to get. The rest is just boxes and cylinders in gmax! Any other creators reading this thread, feel free to run with anything you see here. I certainly don't want to hog the scene and can't make everything myself!

On the logo thing again; I tried all those arguments like "it's free advertising for you" , "it's only for non-payware 3D models in a game that has registered users" and "there's no possible way these models could be used to harm the company's image". The response was still a flat "no" with no attempt at any logical reasoning behind it. It left me feeling very pissed off.

I believe you can put up a case that it's "fair and reasonable use" of a logo, but honestly, who wants to end up in court against company lawyers, especially if you work for the same company? My advice would be to either ask before doing the model or take your chances and not ask at all.

has any one looked at the models on the sketchup 3d warehouse, maybe contact the authors and ask for permission to convert the models for trainz.

there is a ton of stores, and buildings on there, maybe some of them would be willing to allow permission, if credits were left in the object for trainz use.

just thinking out side the box here.

Oh mouse with a disposition to potato,

There a many scenery items yet awaiting some kind soul to liberate them into their rightful place, amongst their pears peasants & personae, on the DLS.

Such things as:-
  • Heaps more motorcycles (well-modelled ones) British European & Japanese circa 1940's through to today. Both scenic & 'loco'. The loco ones tilting when negotiating corners. The scenery ones leaning on their sidestands or rider sitting astride with feet on ground. And for-aft tilting.
  • Furphy water tank on trailer & on stand
  • Horse-drawn hay baling/mowing mfm....scenery & loco, with animated side-feeder chute.
  • kayak. Both scenery & loco. The loco animated paddling with oar wake.
Old polished timber speedboat with skiers. Animated loco with wakes

etc etc etc.

Hello Mark

Im buliding Plymouth as part of my Plymouth - Penzance and branches route.

Mark

I am very glad to hear it. You make an excellent job of creation so I look forward to seeing the station and any other assets you feel like putting up, on the DS.
Also of course the route if you intend to make it available once completed.

Bless you,

Angela

Is there anything in the way of scenery that hasn't already been made for Trainz? Just looking for inspiration I guess...

One thing that seems to be missing is trackside clutter, such as old abandoned white goods, refrigerators, washing machines etc, old mattresses, tyres and other junk that has been dumped.
There are some abandoned cars in the dls which come in handy.

Some vehicles that have been involved in crashes, and a tow / wreckers truck to take them away.

Alex.

Passenger Sets for Different Eras

How about passenger sets for different eras. It's a little disconcerting to build a layout set in the 40's with steam locomotives and all and pull into a station with women in shorts or miniskirts and men in grungy T-shirts. It just doesn't look right! There's already a passenger set for the old west, but we could also use one for (a) Victorian era, (b) US - WWII era, and (c) 1950's during transition from steam to diesel. It would also be nice to have a passenger set in winter clothes for those snowy winter layouts. (The miniskirts don't seem to look right in the snow!) Then, to top it all off, it would be nice to have an invisible station (like andi06's) which would allow you to select which passenger set to use. That shouldn't be too difficult considering the wealth of people figures already made, although it would be nice to expand on the selection to include winter, 1940's and 1950's.

Just a couple of quick things.

Firstly, I wouldn't be too worried about making models of famous business houses like Burger King, Subway etc. Provided they're done properly without putting the business down, I hardly think the owners would be offended. If they were, then threaten to replace the signage with that of a competitor!

Finally, without trying to push my own barrow, my new Trainz Resources Directory which isn't officially open yet, has plans and graphics of many items you may wish to model. You're welcome to pay a visit so just dive in and enjoy. If you know of stuff that isn't yet listed, please let me know. The link is in my signature.

The Trainz web sites section should be completely updated in a few days then I may officially open the site for business even though I still have hundreds of listings to post.

I like the sound of this. It meets my main criteria (a) it's probably within my capabilities, (b) it could tap quite a rich vein of material, (c) it's not too specialised so would be useful for many layouts and (d) it apparently hasn't received a lot of attention. Could make a nice change for me.

It would be simple to add attachment points on the rear of a tow tuck and the front of the disabled vehicle , using invisible track it could be scripted to approach the vehicle back up , 'couple' , and drive away ?

Just an additional thought --- ,DLR

I'd like an american style auto coupler with the origin at the coupler head instead of the base, to convert european locos:)
(I couldn't find one anywhere, anyone know of an existing one?)
