What Desktop

I agree and have built my systems myself, but then there are people who don't want to be bothered with putting the kit together themself, or they are afraid their ability isn't there to do it even though the process isn't difficult at all.

Yes, that's very true John, but this should highlight what a ripoff OEM computers are. The solution is to look at an independent shop that will build from either customer-supplied components or at least a customer-supplied list. Many of these also have volume license of Windows, so customers can somewhat offset the build cost.

20% Value Added Tax?
I wish we had a VAT here so we wouldn't be bothered by income taxes. But then I haven't had much of an income since my Silicon Valley job was sent to China.:(

Problem is, new taxes don't replace other ones; they tend to be in addition to existing ones, regardless of what the politicians claim.

Ha ha we have Income Tax AND VAT! I smoke and I commented to a newsagent about the price of ciggies (about £5.78 for 20) and he relplied that he only made a tiny profit when he sold a pack. The vast majority of the price goes to the government.

Hi guys,

I'm going to starting picking things up over the next few months. Just a few questions. Is there a website where I can see if what I want is compatible with each other?

I was going to pick up a case first, but what next? Motherboard? Processor? What order should I do stuff in?

I have a couple of unused external firewire drives. I was wondering about taking the drives out and using these as extra drives (main drive will be SSD) what would I need to pick up to stick this drives in?

Cheers

Like I said earlier several of the mainstream PC magazines do a list of components to build various standards of PC based on your budget, and all those components are (naturally) compatible. You'd be best to get the case first - if you don't mind your PC looking brutal I suggest the HAF-X http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...x=aps&hvadid=454841928&ref=pd_sl_6xu86ufrrp_e or the HAF 922 if you are on a budget. Motherboard should be next, if you want to be bang up to date an LGA 2011 mobo is nice but these only take Intel CPU's.
