What about Railworks?

C'mon, don't be disingenuous...

...just type "railworks" into the forum search, and you'll get plenty of opinions.;)

Well we're all railfans right? And I already bought TS2010 for the full pound, so no more loss for Auran, right? Just curious, the CAB interiors on Railworks look sublime, that's how I got interested.

I looked at it. I wouldn't buy it because of the DRM, even at less than $10 pre-Christmas. But, that aside, there really doesn't seem to be much content for it and what there is, is almost all payware, so it's kind of pointless anyway. I tried a Christmas demo they had and, while graphically it's probably better than MSTS, I wouldn't say it's any better than TS2010. Frankly, Auran needs some competition to keep their feet to the fire, but RW isn't it.

Can you get Railworks content into trainz?

No... (and "no" you can't get .cdp's directly into Railworks 2 either). Railworks content files are either in .rwp (or .rpk format) and while they are in that format, they can't be directly imported into any version of Trainz. Trainz .cdp files can't be directly imported into Railworks 2...

Cheers, Mac...

Opinions.. yes. Unstable Ground.. also a yes. RW, MSTS, those are both pretty shaky topics on a Trainz forum.

In my experience, RW and MSTS get much fairer treatment when they're discussed on these forums, than Trainz does on any RW or MSTS forum. Heck, there aren't any (that I know of) RW forums where dissenting opinions about RW are allowed. You can't even point out that it's taken them 3 months and counting to restore the HST brakes after they messed them up with the RW2 'upgrade' (there is an easy fix too, although it's probably not safe to talk about on here either).

Hi Everybody.
I purchased roadworks approximately two months ago and I have been “giving it a go” ever since. I have not been able to spend as much time with it as I would have liked to due to work I have been doing and then Christmas coming along.

Having said that, I have spent some time running the routes pre-installed with the game and also the Bristol to Exeter addon which I bought separately. I have also managed to do quite a number of scenarios for the addon route which have gone well.

I have been asked by a long-standing member of the forum if I would type up and unbiased review and assessment of Railworks when I had some experience under my belt. I have said that it would be happy to do that but it may not be for a couple of weeks yet as I have just started route building with Railworks and I would like to see how I get on with that first.

However, if a number of forum members are interested I will post the stated unbiased review in the general topics thread in a week or two's time if the interest is there.

I know Nikia will vouch for my balanced views and forum character if references are needed.:hehe:

It is okay. The physics seem to be better than TRS, but it is alot more limited, both in AI and surveyor functions. Also, before recently, in order to get all of the content you would have had to pay $900.00. Now you can get that content for the low price of $200.00. A bit pricey for my tastes. Though I am interested in looking into the loco scrap yard DLC that they have. It looks fun.

Bill,
Looking forward to reading your unbiased review of Railworks 2. Personally I can't quite understand all this "them versus us" or ("us versus them") bs. At the end of the day, we are all train sim fans. (& in some cases, train fanatic's)...

Curiosity was getting the better of me, so I finally brought Railworks 2 (for the first time) recently. Initially I wasn't all that impressed. Once I got into it a bit more and played around with the setting, & looking at other built in routes, I was impressed with the graphic's and the driver/fireman/passengers animations. As a "just driving experience" of the built in routes, I thought it was very reasonable. (the first route I looked at ended up being the worst of the built in routes, hence why I wasn't so impressed).

I know think both sims have their pluses and minuses... (I haven't got into route building or trying to set up sessions in RW 2, so I can't comment on that). From what I've read in other posts in this forum, that's where the problems start. Having looked at several RW2 web sites, there's certainly alot of payware out there for RW2. While there is some freeware content out there, it's nowhere near whats out there for Trainz...

To me, a bit of competition is a good thing. It will keep N3V on it's toes. It will force N3V to continue to be innovative if they want to stay ahead of the competition.

Cheers, Mac...
