Water.

Hello all.

Just been looking at the rail fuel tanker cars and noticed that one of the products some can carry is water.

Can anyone please tell me which industry produces water as I would like to put a water production facility on my route.

Thanks for any help.

Craig.

Hi Craig

I believe that tank cars carrying water could be used abroad as barrier cars between the loco(s) and other tank cars which could be carrying dangerous or volatile substances. In the UK for example a couple of vans or open wagons would be used between the loco and the tank wagons and also between the tank wagons and the brake van where present, on oil or chemical trains to minimise the risk to the crews in the event of an accident.

Regards

Brian

Hi Fran.

Tried Multi industry new and was able to load the tanker cars on my test route. :D So I can put them on the route I'm making.

Hi Brian & Cascaderailroad, I never thought of putting a water tank or 2 between something like an oil tanker. Makes sense.

Thanks for your help.

Craig.

The FRA has a subsection on placement of placarded cars within the train. You need "buffer" cars between the engine and occupied caboose, and a bunch of other rules on what cars can be next to those placarded cars. That being said, I agree that another tank car of water would be a pretty bad idea, not to mention add extra weight to the train that most railroads wouldn't want to bother with.

In the real world, these "buffer" cars, when necessary, are various empty cars. Sometimes flats, but most of the time I see them being old beat up low-wall gondolas (the good ol' "Chippies" cars in Trainz) that don't have much use in today's railroading world.
