Vista 32 or 64

Hi to all. It's quite a while since I have posted as the forum has answered most of my problems.

I would like to update to Vista but I am not sure which to choose as Trainz is my main simulation and game that I still play. I have had experience with both 32 Bit & 64 Bit Vista but I am unsure which Vista would be better for the my games computer.

I am also looking at getting the 2009 version as well (after the bugs are worked out).

Also is there a page dedicated to installing Trainz into Vista?

Please any assistance would be gracefully received.

Regards

hello Sardo,

There are quite a few threads relating to Vista but no actual dedicated page that i am aware of. Do a search for Vista and several will pop up.

There seems to be a fairly even division of folks as to whether Trainz works with Vista. Basically it is a matter of hit or miss. The biggest problems seem to stem from the way Vista handles disk drive access (account privelege) and requires the user to run Trainz as Administrator.

As I said though, do a search and you will get more pertinent information.

have fun

Brian

Thank You Brian,

Have you heard of which Vista may be the best to try though 32 bit or 64 bit and do you know if this would be one of the problems. I am told that 64 bit is more secure. I have been looking through the forum (aka: Vista) but I haven't come across what Bit people are using.

I run '04 on vista and it works quite well. Along with all the other associated gear like Trainzobjectz, paintshed, trainztuner etc. There are a few small gremlins from time to time but judging on some of the posts that pop up, it's par for the course ( even on xp)! Most 32 bit software will run on 64 bit hardware but to be totally honest I don't think anyone really knows!
Install it and see....:)
Ps. I run vista home basic 32 bit on a 64 bit Amd dual core 4800 2.5 ghz processor. I don't have a 64 bit os. I don't run as administrator and the versions of 04 and 06 i see in the stores lately have a sticker on them saying vista compatible!

32 bit vista may have better drivers if you aren't running mainstream motherboards etc. Currently 64 bit Vista is selling better than 32 bit and allows more memory to be accessed.

I'm starting to get things together to build a new machine to run Trainz and it will be 64 bit Vista even though Trainz today only needs 32 bit Vista.

Just starting with Vista 64 bit...

I just got a new machine, and decided to go with Vista 64 bit (partly to take advantage of 4 gig RAM). My plan is to run TC 3 (with 1 & 2 content) and also install all 2006 (and some 2004) content; also GMax (and/or another 3d application).

So far, I've installed TC 3 (with 1&2 content) and Auran's TC3 patch. The installs went great until I applied the TC 3517 - 3529 update patch. I had a lot of errors during the patch, but then I found a tip on these forums that suggested a need to flip the write-protect bit on the contents of the TC folder. When I did that, the patch installed fine.

So far, all that seems to be running very smoothly (although it's only been a day). Today, I'll attempt to add the 2006 built-in assets (if I have time). At any rate, I'm expecting things to work fine and have no regrets yet.

Trainz is really the only simulator or game I fiddle around with, and I hope my hardware platform should be decent enough for 2009 when that is released.

As far as Vista 64 goes, my only stumbles have not been specific to either the 32 or 64 bit versions... I just had to get used to the Vista way of doing things as opposed to the XP way.

Thanks to All,

I would like to see now that this post continue to see what results are happening between 32 & 64 bit systems. It doesn't matter to me which one really because I can obtain either or test on a couple of friends computers before making my mind up but testing on others computers can be hard because you are using there stuff and not your own.

It would also be great if there was a specific forum for installing trainz VERSIONS into different WINDOWS versions. (To Many Versions Of Each Now) :D

Please jrockey post your results.

Regards
Sardo
