Vaporware My excuse ! What's Yours.

In our forums 'Vaporware' gets a mention with reference to many proposed or under construction Routes that are never seen or ever heard off again .

This article was started about 6 months ago ( before I had a health problem ) and found still unfinished on my notebook.

My route of the Brisbane Tram system was commenced in about 2004 and started by doing the line from the "Gabba Five Ways" too Salisbury , "Wooloongaba" Cricket fans will know that's where the famous cricket ground is .
As I know the area well it seemed a good starting point , but of course I didn't stop there , there are a few other lines radiating from the Five Ways , East too Balmoral also South East Via Stones Corner too Carina / Belmont ( the most Easterly point for Trams on the East Coast of Australia ) and South Too Mt Gravatt central .
There were more lines on the Southside of the Brisbane River so they needed to be done , so completing South Brisbane and the remaining Lines , West End and Dutton Park that meant all most one third of the total system for Brisbane was finished.

In the Process of all this building "Motorman 1066" ( Sel ) an avid Tram fan and former Driver, started making Infrastructure galore for me to use , including nearly all the Tram fleet used by the BCC Tramway .

So as a "Thankyou" to Sel I started on the Rainworth Line North of the River ( going past his old house ) that also included doing the Toowong Line Plus Roma Street and part of the City ( Vulcan "Ian" ) made the Old Victoria Tram Bridge for me , willem2 ( Bill ) made some Special Tram stop buildings as well.
Thank you Mates I was a real Pest I'm sure !

This was my Big mistake ! I should have Uploaded the route "as is" AT THIS stage , what an idiot !

No I didn't ! but continued on with building the other Two Thirds North of the River , but over a long long period of time , got bored with working on one Route.

I was side-tracked into doing ( and uploading ) a couple of other Routes that appealed to me , in the meantime a few more versions of Trainz became available with their increasing updating of asset requirements , somewhat leaving Tram assets behind .
By this time All of the Brisbane City Tram Route was complete , But Sel had moved on and no longer available to update and upload many assets , what a blow !!

So now it is not worth trying to change or replace a whole host of assets ,
Or upload the Route.

So that's My fault err my excuse and I'm stuck with it !!

I could actually suggest, by the by, as I've done to other "Vaporware Creators" I think you seem to be attempting to style yourself, that you could actually still upload it.... You just have to accomplish a few things first. Namely the updating of the build #.

After that, release it with a warning approximating "Route Released AS IS. Old and Outdated Content INCLUDED. If you wish to fix it and Run it, thats your call! Author takes no responsibility for any issues including missing assets, obsolete assets, or harmed Pixels, in the process of your downloading or usage of this route". BAM, uploaded route...... I could suggest Opening it in TS12, taking a quick look around, and having the game take a screenshot of whatever scene is still the most intact to give people an Idea of what your route was at one time capable of giving them, so as to give it a chance to "Put its best foot forward" as it were.....

I have a sneaky suspicion that its too easy for most route creators to try to go too far and burn themselves out. Without a second pair of eyes on it to say "Ok, we've gone far enough guy for this section, Lets release!", theres ALWAYS something you can do better or make more expansive or inclusive..... Even the TrainzItalia's folk mentioned this phenomena regarding their Donner Pass Route.... So what I'd say is that, instead of allowing that route to die an ignominious death, let it fulfil its original purpose which was to add to the library of available content for Trainz Users, while at the same time releasing what would appear to be your guilt(?) about it. You're bored with that route, and understandably so, and it'd take more work then you want to update it.... So put it on the DLS and let anyone that wants to try their hand at it do so.....

Good Luck

P.S: whats the worst that could happen if you uploaded it tonight?

Norm,

I think everyone has vaporware especially if they create steam locomotives! :D Sorry I couldn't help the small pun there as they tend to sneak out all too often. Anyhow, it's part of the creative process. You see, as you've found out, you get stuck and bored with a big project. Building a high quality route takes time and energy, and both of which are usually at short supply, at least for me with energy being the biggest thing as of late. So ideas start popping, the creative juices flow, and we build. We build furiously or until we run out of steam again when the big route becomes like we're eating big piles of dry, stale. crackers every day for a year. At that point, it's best to take a break and start on something else.

My big route, which was started in January 2004, has been through this quite a few times. I'm currently editing it, yet again, but for how long is the question. I've added a new section, well replaced this section twice now because the other two were, well sucky in my opinion, and I'm now moving along slowly. In the meant time, I go off and do other things and come back as I run of out that creative juice all too soon so it's time to rejuvenate it by watching train videos and doing other stuff so the brain has a chance to work out the next steps in the creative process.

The thing is there are also many aborted attempts at route building. I have probably a gazillion dead routes I started, even drew up plans of on paper as I worked up and out infinite little details only to delete them part way into the process. A number of them were quite far along when I did that. Why, I didn't like their outcome so it was time to redo them again, at another day. This is what's great about this hobby. We can do this all without wasting lots of plaster, paper, plastic kits, wire, and track. We've probably only moved a layer of electrons and iron filings around on our computer's hard drives, but the cost to us is nothing more than our time and energy.

Keep in mind that Vaporware is only vaporware if you promised the project for someone and never delivered. :)

That's why I never or very rarely announce anything (whatever the sim) until it's done or very nearly done these days. I've fallen foul of it myself in the past and it's all too easy to get people's hopes up that they're going to see a favourite route (maybe stop someone else having ago) to see it fizzle out into nothing. I always smile when you see the enthusiastic kiddies come on and say they are planning to build a 150 mile section of mainline, the chances of it getting beyond a few boards or thereabouts is usually fairly minimal.

Trainz with its unstable saves is alot to blame for Vaporware also, in my opinion

Actually, if you figure out the kinks, since I've gone to 61388 I haven't had an unsuccessful save since the first day after I upgraded....

For me, I had a route that was about 90% complete. Then I decided that I could do a much better job making the route more "historically correct" then it already was. I started over and got bored, and the people that were helping me got bored and moved on to other interests. I finally realized that the project was too big for me to finish on my own. So for that reason and a few other things I took issue with here, I packed the whole project up and loaded it to an external hard drive for saving. Maybe someday when I can get a willing group together, I'll pull it back out and finish it...but that's doubtful.

Like the OP, I should of released the original route as it was.

I'd also like to add that it is very hard to get a group of people to work on the same project and function successfully. I failed at this task many times.

I know being a "Project Manager" has its own additional set of quirky requirements on top of producing whatever the project is.... Id have to imagine trying to manage a bunch of amateur creators in an attempt at collaboration with mixed backgrounds and varying levels of interest with their own reasons for being there at all would be tantamount to Herding Cats.....
