using clones in a route?

route builder
Sorry for all my questions, but they just keep popping up.

Finding the "stuff" one needs when building a route can be quite the challenge. Often I find something real nice I want to use, but not necessarily at that moment. Then when I go to find it again, I can't, cause lots of files has names that has little or nothing to do with what it is, and often no description. So I started writing the titles down on pieces of paper, but now I have so many pieces of paper flying around that it's becoming impossible to find what I need here too :'(

I read in another post about people cloning object, partly to fix errors, and partly to rename them so they could find them again. That's an idea, but what happens then when you want to upload a route? You can't upload cloned assets can you? And then, if someone download your route (providing you can upload), they will have a bunch of missing dependencies, and "holes" in the map.

What do you do???

In your case you can rename objects without cloning as long as the kuid number doesnt chnage in which case the kuid number does change when you clone em and claiming them as your creations........

I basically have done the renaming of rolling stock to keep track of them in a classified manor and this does also work with any other object by changing the "username" (only) to your preferences.....

It's just an idea, but on the route i'm building i've put an extra board on one side. Then I go through all the content I want to use and if any are used more than once they are placed on the extra board. When I use them more than once I just click the get button click the the item to use and place it. When the route is finished I just delete the extra board.

In TRS2006, you can add keywords to items to help you find them using the keyword filter in surveyor. You can also back these up in case of losing your assets.tdx file in a crash.

Thanks both, good ideas. The extra board sounds like a real good one, cause I often stumble onto something nice, when I look for something else (isn't that how it always is), and then I can place it on the x-board and not worry about remembering.

I have a few routes that have assets I like and want to find again. If I can't remember where to find something, I go to my catalog route, click on the item I want with the "what's this?" button and note what the name, region and type is, then go back to my project route and call it up.

Yea, I do that too, but first I have to remember where I saw that nice piece of whatever I wanted to use, he he

Is there any way of putting objects into your own folders rather than the ones trainz makes you use?

Andy;)

Hi jytte,

If you get Tafweb's program "Trainz Objects" (often referred to as "TO"),
you can form groups of favourite items, sort columns, check dependencies etc etc. However that's for TRS2004. If your running TRS2006/whatever, I suggest you start a thread asking how to catalogue your favourite stuff, & make sure to include which Trainz & version you have.
Many members find TO invaluable, & use it each time when downloading new items (to run a check for errors etc). TO has many more useful functions too numerous to mention here.
Here's a link:-

Make sure to read through, before deciding to update to the latest version.

Yes in 2004 but note sure about later versions. In 04 you can add folders in the custom folder and name them like trees, houses, stations etc. The only draw back is on loading it will take trainz a long time to start as all the custom folder content is not in the cache file so has to be read everytime you load.
